| KNOXVILLE ALUMNAE CHAPTER, MU PROVINCE FOUNDED MARCH 6, 1960 INSTALLED APRIL 23, 1960 In the Spring of 1959, the Women's Music Association was formed. The purpose of this group was to obtain a charter of Sigma Alpha Iota on the University of Tennessee Campus. Mrs. Ruth Gould visited the campus, the fall quarter, 1959. A petition was granted. On April 23, 1960, nineteen women were initiated into the charter chapter of Gamma Rho. Five of these women were professional musicians, soon affiliated with the Knoxville Alumnae Chapter, founded the same day as Gamma Rho. Five were seniors who soon graduated.
