Ive talked about a TV show and some Music that youve never heard of, so it was only a matter of time before I got around to movies. Unfortunately, it is mainly just my friends who look at this site, and they have all seen these movies (and some of them are the reasons that Ive seen these movies). These are in no particualar order. I just wrote them when I thought about them.
Fandango: This movie was Kevin Costners first feature role. Fandango was adapted from a short film made by a graduate student at the University of Texas. Its about a group of 5 men that just graduated from college (well, most of them anyways) so they take a 500 mile road trip across Texas (with lots of booze). Steven Spielberg produced the movie, but he pulled funding for advertising before it came out. Thats why few have ever heard of it.
Mating Habits of the Earthbound Human: A hilarious movie set from the point of view of aliens making a documentary about the mating habits of earthbound humans (go figure). David Hyde Pierce (Niles, from friends) narrates it beautifully. All-around it is funny. It also has lots of Carmen Electra in skimpy clothing, which is always a plus.
Army of Darkness: Probably most of you have heard of this movie, but it is a cult classic, and therefore falls under the scope of this list. It is a great movie, but that depends on who you ask. It is either loved or hated, there is no middle ground. The divide is split almost perfectly along gender lines. 99.9% of men love it, 99.9% of women hate it (kind of like Wizard of OZ, just reversed). Read Maddoxs review of it here. He does a better job writing than anything I could do, so check it out.
Princess Mononoke: Quite simply, the best Anime movie ever. It is not the typical, action-based (although the action sequences are quite good), blood and guts, gratuitous cartoon nudity anime. This Anime does a splendid job of developing great characters and a solid plot. All characters are represented as having some good and evil in them. Nobody is black or white, the bad guys do good things sometimes, and the good guys do bad things sometimes. The blurring of the typical black-white, good vs. evil story is what makes this special.
Equilibrium: 1 thing makes this movie great action sequences that rival (and often surpass) the Matrix. The plot is not nearly as interesting or developed as the Matrix, although it does hold your attention well. If youve ever read the Giver, that is pretty much the society that this movie takes place in. Emotion has been outlawed as a way to reduce crime. It is the story of the fight against this emotional oppression. It could be a great plot, but not for an action movie. The action more than lives up to its billing though so it remains a must see.
