Article 12: You Like a Band that Ive Never Heard of, Well Whop de Shit!

My Opinions

I was going to sit down and write an article about how unimportant it is that you know some band that no one ever has or ever will hear of. Then I remembered that I am guilty of that very thing, and not nearly to the extent that some people are, but I have some out in vocal support of BRMC, which is a band that few have heard of. Now, Ive done that to try and get people to listen to music that I think is good. There are some out there that only like a band if no one knows about them. They make it their job to like bands that youve never heard of. They get sad when their favorite band hits it big because they have to stop liking them because they are now mainstream. That is fucking pathetic, and most people dont do that, least of all me. If I like the music I will buy the album, whether millions of people own it or just me. I dont care if a band sells out as long as they keep producing good music. But people still feel proud when they know a good band that few others know. I am quicker to drop the name of BRMC than some of my other favorite bands just because they are less well known. Why do we do that? I guess it has something to do with the possessive nature of people. I heard this first, and that makes it more important to me. The same reason we are explorers, I want to see what no one else has seen, or in this case to hear what no one else has heard.

Its not just music either. People do this very thing in many walks of life. We have even made a board game about it, Trivial Pursuit. The title itself says it all, Trivial Pursuit, the pursuit of something trivial, something that no one cares about, and yet we care so much about it. Some may say, it is a test of knowledge. It is really more a test of how much free time you have to find out this useless stuff. So, my question to you is, why do we care about the little stuff so much? Why do we focus on knowing the obscure stuff? Why do we feel proud when we know something that no one has any business knowing? I dont know the answers, Im just trying to inspire some thought.
