"DISCUSSION PROGRAMME"

 
  1. There will be a number of scheduled discussion sessions where you will be exchanging ideas and viewpoints on a range of topics.

  2. Please refer to the Pink coloured Guidebook for details about topics to be discussed during the programme.

  3. Please do some research on topics so that you are able to contribute to these discussions.

  Purpose

The Discussion Programme intends to encourage the PYS:

  1. to deepen their understanding of the current situation of various fields in each country; and

  2. to promote mutual understanding, to improve skills to exchange views with other members, and to enhance the ability at presenting their own ideas in public, through a free-flowing and active exchange of opinions.

  Theme

The common theme for the Discussion programme for SSEAYP 2005:

"Youth Participation and Roles in Society"

  Group Theme

The group-themes will be as follows:

  1. Environment
  2. Information: Media, PR, IT etc.
  3. Inter-Cultural Understanding
  4. International Relation
  5. School Education
  6. Traditional Culture
  7. Volunteer Activities
  8. Youth Development Activity in Community
 


Discussion Programme during the Pre-Departure Training
 

Objectives:
The objective of the discussion during PDT:

1. As a preparation for on board discussion
2. To have better knowledge about the topics
3. To share all the points or facts from all PYS
4. To have mutual understanding and cooperation among PYS
5. To respect PYS’ ideas
6. To feel the atmosphere of discussion or presentation and gain experience

 

Roles of Discussion sub-committee members were as follows:


1. To group or divide PYS into smaller groups of the discussions and to carry them out smoothly (based on the respective group-themes).
2. To decide the procedure of the discussions.
a. To help in the discussion procedure by coordinating in the elections of a chairperson and a secretary by the members of the group
b. To decide the venue of discussion
c. To decide the time break for discussion
d. To solve any problem aroused during the discussion period.
3. To decide the procedure of the presentation of the results.

 


OTHERS:
1. PYS must be fully prepared themselves with knowledge so that they will learn more from the topic discussed with PYS from other countries i.e. more information should be gathered on all aspects such as development, lifestyle, tourism, youth, IT and educational System.
2. For the effectiveness of the presentation, it is much better if different methods will be used, not just explaining with the aid of the projector or flip chart. A short role-play could be presented appropriate with topics discussed.
3. Question and answer manner as in a forum or any other forms.
4. PYS are not to scare of discussion but must have adequate information and knowledge on the theme of the discussion.
5. Receives any advises from ex-PY especially the previous contingent Discussion’s sub-committee but remember, discussion process will be different from one year to another year.
6. Discussion Sub-committee: Should think about ways to make discussion activity more attractive and enjoyable.
7. Upon completion of presentation from all sub-groups, a meeting will be held to discuss, prepare for compilation and the production of a Discussion Booklet.
