Prologue June 2001 Nick took a look around the house, making sure that he hadn't forgotten anything. The house looked cold and unfamiliar as he waked in and out of each emptied room. Once he was satisfied that everything was packed he walked down the stairs to tell the movers to finish lauding the rest of the stuff onto the truck. Nick walked out to the balcony to take one last looked t the ocean. He breathed in deep and closed his eyes. He'll never forget the smell of the ocean, or the feel of the wind blowing threw his hair. "Daddy, We go now?" Nick looked down at his six-year old daughter Isis. He bends over, picks her up and gives her a big hug. "Yeah, we go now." He told her taking one last look at the ocean. They drove off. "We come back soon daddy?" Isis asked him from her car seat in the back "NO honey, we're coming back for a long while." He answered her. He watched his house in the review mirror until it was out of view. "Not for a long while. He repeated softly to himself, s a single tear fell down his cheek. "Goodbye my friends." He whispered to the wind. ********************************************************************** Chapter 1 `7 years later' Nick sat in a chair on his balcony staring at the ocean. He had been sitting there all day long. He had been back in Florida for only a week, and already he felt at home. The wind was blowing lightly threw his hair and the sun was beating down, making the air warm. A wonderful change from the Oregon rain. As he sat there, he kept thinking to himself that this was a wonderful idea, to move back to Florida. After seen years, he was about ready to do anything to feel the Florida weather again. The idea came from his daughter. "DAD! I'm home." Isis yelled as she came into the house. "I'm on the back porch. " He yelled back. "Dad." She started as she sat in a chair across from him. "When I left for school you were sitting in the exact place. Please tell me you did something besides sit here all day." She said, sitting back in her chair and looking at her father for an answer. "I got up to make a sandwich for lunch." He said with a grin on his face. Isis looked at her father as if her were the most pitiful person in the world. "My dear old father, what am I going to do with you." She said, shaking her head. "OLD! I'm only 28. I'm not old!" He said looking appalled. "Your still older then me." She replied. "Only by 14 years!" He argued "So you're still old...so.hmph." "Well, on that sad note how was school?" "It was great! I got an A on a test on a book I've never heard of and Mr. Littrell said I could try out for the girl's basketball team." "Mr. Littrell?' Nick asked her. "Yeah, He's my P.E. Teacher and said that I have real talent in basketball and...." "What's his first name?" Nick interrupted her. "His name is Brain Littrell...anyways he wants a concert form from you so I can try out." "NO. And I want you out of that class." Nick said standing up and walking towards the house. "But dad..." She protested. "No buts, I said no basketball and I would call the school to get you out of the class. He said sternly He walked into the house as tears fell down Isis's eyes. **************************************************** Chapter 2 Isis opened her locker to put her books away after her last class. The halls were empting quickly as students rushed out of the school to go do there various after schools activates. "Miss carter, did your father sign the consent form?" Isis turned around from her locker to find Mr. Littrell there. "No, my dad said I can't join the team, and he's getting me out of your p.e. Class." She told him sadly. "Why?" "I don't know, I mentioned you and her decided that I couldn't join the team." She told him. Turning back to her locker to finish putting books away. Brian stood there a moment, tiring to figure out why her father would do that. "What's your fathers name. I'll give him a call." He suggested. "Well, good luck with that. His name is Nick Carter." She closed her locker and walked away. "Nick Carter?" He said to himself. "Naw...it couldn't be...could it." All the way home he couldn't stop thinking about it. " Could it be nick?" He thought. " Nick did have a daughter named Isis." As soon as he got him he called up his good friends Howie, Kevin, and AJ...for help. ********************************************************************** Chapter 3 "Bri, why'd you call us all over here?" AJ asked, sitting down on the sofa next to Howie. "Well.... I think nick is back." Brian told them. "What!" The other three shouted. "I'm not sure but I have reasons to suspect it." Brian said, looking at the floor. They sat there in silence, thinking to themselves "could it be" then Howie finally spoke up. "What makes this suspicion any more valid then every other one over the past seven years?" They were quiet once more, taking in what Howie had said. It's true too. They've been searching for Nick ever since he left without telling anyone. "I know...but I have reasons to believe that this one is true." "And what are those reasons?" Kevin asked. "Remember Isis Marie?" Brian said simply. "Of course we do, how can anyone forget that sweetie." AJ said, a huge smile on his face. "Well, I have an Isis Marie Carter in my P.E. Class. She was going to try out for basketball, but her father said she couldn't cause he freaked out when he heard my name:" Brian said. "Well, I freak out when if hear your name." AJ joked. "I told her I'd call her father, she told me his name was Nick. Now you tell me how many Nick Carters in this universe can possibly be connected to an Isis Marie Carter." Brian asked. "I say we do some research on these two before we do anything. Remember what happened last time." Kevin said as everyone looked at AJ. "Oops." He said. "Ok, but let's get a move on. I want to know as soon as possible. I've been so scared for him." Brian said. "Us too Bri, us too" Howie said, starting a group hug. ********************************************************************** Chapter 4 "Ok, Now, do you have the list? " Jazzlyn asked Isis as they walked up and down h isles of the grocery store. "Yes I do Jazzy. We need to pick up drinks first, then comely approach the chocolate, then the pastries." Isis said, heading down the drink isle. "You're dad must be crazy to let us do this." "Do what? Get wired on sugar and caffeine and stay up all night laughing like crack addicts at stupid things." Isis asked, grabbing some Dr. Pepper. "Well, yeah... something like that." "Don't worry, dad and I do that all the time." They were quiet for a moment before cracking up laughing. They started walking the down the isle still laughing and not paying attention t where they were going, because they bumped into someone. "Oh, I'm sorry." Isis said as she turned to see who it was. "Oh, Mrs. Carter, hello there." Jazzlyn said. "Hello Jazzy, how have you been?" Jane Carter asked. "I'm doing fine. I'm sorry we bumped you. We weren't exactly paying attention to where we were going." Jazzy told her apologetically. "Well, that's all right. Why don't you introduce me to your friend?" She said. "Ok, Isis Marie, this is Jane Carter. Jane Carter, this is Isis Marie," Jazzlyn introduced them. "Mrs. Carter lives across the street from me." "Excuse me, did you say Isis Marie?" Jane interrupted. "Yeah, I'm Isis Marie Carter. I just moved here." Isis told her, shacking her hands. "Carter," Jane replied quietly to herself. "Um..Yeah." Isis said back, kinda confused. "Uh.. Do you have a father named Nick?" Jane asked her, hoping it was true. "Yes it is. May I ask why?" "Oh my goodness. BOB!" Jane shouted. "What's going on, you're scaring me." Isis said, slowly backing up. "What is it Jane, are you ok?" Bob Carter said, rushing up to her. "Look, Nick is back. This is Isis." Jane said coming near her "Get away from me!" Isis yelled as she ran out of the store. "Isis Wait! I'm sorry Mrs. Carter." Jazzlyn said as she ran after Isis. ****************************************** Chapter 5 "Isis, wait!" Jazzlyn yelled, running down the street after Isis. Isis turned into the gate of her larger house and ran into the house. "Isis!" Jazzlyn yelled again. "Whoa, he, slow down." Nick said as Isis bumped into Nick, who was walking down the hall. "I'm sorry." She said, running past him and up to her room, slamming the door. Jazzlyn soon followed into the house. "What happened to her? Nick asked Jazzlyn. "I don't exactly know. I introduced her to my neighbor, Mrs. Carter and Mrs. Carter called Mr. Carter and said `look, nick is back' and Isis ran out of the store. "Um, who's Mr. & Mrs. Carter?" Nick asked. Praying silently to him it was a different couple. "Jane and Robert Carter." Jazzlyn Said "Um.. Jazzlyn, I think it would be better if you want home. I have to talk to Isis, and I probably won't end very prettily." Nick said. "Ok, have her call me later thought." "I will. " As soon as Jazzlyn left Nick stood at the bottom of the stars. "Oh boy, here I go" He said to himself as he started up the stairs to Isis's room. ********************************************************************** Chapter 6 Nick stood out side Isis's door. He's been standing there for at least 20 mints. "Isis, are you ok?" Nick asked, slowly opening the door. "Just go away dad." She said her voice muffled from being t under the pillow. Nick walked over to her bed and sat down next to her. He started absent-mindedly playing with her hair with his right hand. "Isis, please tell me what's the matter. I hate seeing you are so upset." He told her. "I don't understand it. Why people are treating me like they know me. But I don't' know them." She sat up and looked at her father. Nick didn't have an answer for his daughter. "Dad." She said very quietly, almost as a whisper. "Why did we leave Florida in the first place?" She asked. "Oh Isis, please don't asked me that. I don't want to get into it." Nick stated. Staring right in the eyes, sadly. "Don't say that, tell me! Why did you take me away from family and friends!" Isis said raising her voice. "Don't yell at me. I am your father. I have the right to take you." Nick said, raising his voice as well. "So just because you are my father you have the right to take me away from everyone who loves me!" She screamed hysterically. Tears were you streaming down her face. "Isis." Nick stated his voice lowering. He paused for a moment to try to put the words together. "I had my reasons for what I did. 'I'm sorry that I did it, but I had good reasons and good intensions. And I'm sorry but I can't and I won't discuss them with you." Nick paused for amoment longer before turning to leave. "Dad" Isis said quietly as he reached the door. He turned around to see what she wanted. "I hate you. I will always hate you. From now ill the day I die." She said with such coldness in her voice it sent shivers sown his spine. Nick quickly exited the room, and backed into the nearest wall and slid down it. Tears slipping down his eyes in, and much regret. Regret for what he did to his daughter. ************************************
