Chapter 9

Kristy, Toni, Kevin, Howie, AJ, Dennis and Tommy joined Kristy's friends at two large tables slightly off the dance floor with a perfect view of most of the club. "Your usual tables?" AJ teased, "And what was with the 'Princess' comment? You aren't really a drag queen are you?!" he said with mock alarm.

Kristy smacked him in the chest. "Dream on!" she chuckled as he faked a wounded look. "I guess I've become sort of a regular..." she said with a small grin. "And Harrison is a patient of mine, so they consider me family," she explained as several people waved to her from around the club. A buff shirtless waiter in a brightly colored vest approached their tables.

"Hey Kristy! Your usual?" he asked as he gave her a hug, to which Kristy nodded. The waiter took the rest of the group's drink orders and several of them made their way to the dance floor.

"So I guess I should learn what your 'usual' is," Kevin said as he pulled Kristy to him to start dancing.

Kristy grinned and her eyes twinkled, "It's called a 'black opal'... it's a Long Island variation." She smirked a bit as she continued to describe it, "It's pretty strong, but sweet... like me!"

Kevin chuckled, "Does it taste as good as you do?" he asked as his lips claimed hers in a leisurely kiss.

Kristy slowly opened her eyes after the kiss ended. "Maybe I shouldn't be drinking tonight," she pondered out loud.

Kevin grinned, "Oh.... why not?" he asked innocently, his hands sensually caressing her back.

Kristy tried to give him a squelching look, but it was ruined by the glimmer in her eyes. "For one, I'm already feeling kinda lightheaded just being around you..." she shook her head as Kevin grinned smugly. "Oh brother, you're gonna be impossible to live with if I tell you the other reason." "I promise I'll behave," he chuckled, wanting to hear what else she had to say.

"Well, you know how alcohol disinhibits people... how it sorta enhances whatever mood you're already in?" she asked. Kevin nodded, a smile playing on his lips as he thought about where this might be going. Kristy leaned forward and whispered in his ear, her lips brushing against his ear lobe, "Well, I'm not sure I can handle being any more attracted to you than I already am." She emphasized this point by running the tip of her tongue along the curve of his ear. This time it was Kristy's turn to be smug as Kevin closed his eyes and swallowed hard.

Kevin sighed and pulled Kristy closer as "Erotic City" started playing. "Based on your story, I'd say that neither of us are the type to jump into a sexual relationship." Kristy nodded, her heart and mind racing at how fast everything seemed to be happening. "But how come I think this is going to be even harder than it seemed in your story?"

Across the dance floor, Toni was taking turns dancing with Tommy, Dennis, AJ and Howie. Soon though, Dennis seemed to be "rotating" through more often than the other, and eventually, the others gave up and joined the BSB dancers and some of the other club patrons. Kristy and Kevin took a break and returned to the tables to get their drinks. Kevin took a sip of Kristy's black opal and grinned, "Are ya sure you don't want to have a few more of these?"

Kristy playfully punched him, "Kevin Richardson! Are you trying to get me intoxicated?" she giggled.

"Just enough so you can't drive home," he chuckled.

Kristy smiled, "That would take quite a lot, considering Denise had a limo pick us up before our meet and greet!"

He laughed and brushed a stand of golden blond hair off her forehead. "Can you believe that was just a few hours ago?" His hand caressed the side of her face and he bent his head down within inches of hers, "I feel like we've known each other forever... am I crazy?"

Kristy shook her head and stared into his deep green eyes, "No, I feel it too."

"Kristy!" AJ interrupted as he and Howie came off the dance floor. "Where're the bathrooms in this joint?" Kristy pointed to the back of the club and the guys started off in that direction. Kevin gave Kristy a sheepish grin and she giggled as she pushed him in the same direction.

Kristy flopped into one of the booth's seats, drawing amused looks from some of her friends. "Spill Butler!" one of the girls commanded.

Kristy faked an innocent look, "Whatever do you mean?"

"You can't expect to show up here with three of the Backstreet Boys, one of whom you've been playing kissy-face with since you got here, and not have to answer a few questions!" one of her other friends teased.

"It's a really long story guys..." she saw that they wouldn't go without some sort of explanation, so she decided to keep it very brief. "But the Cliff Note's version is that I won some tickets to their concert tonight, got to meet and hang with them before and after the concert, Kevin and I clicked, and here we are!"

"I have a feeling there's WAY more to this story... but since none of us read much, we're obviously just going to have to wait for the movie!" someone joked. Kristy rolled her eyes at her friends. They were great people to hang out with and party with, but not exactly the type you shared your deepest dreams and wishes with. Those people were rare and had a special place in Kristy's heart and life. It'd be those friends that she'd talk to about whatever was happening between her and Kevin... when the time was right.

AJ and Howie hesitated before asking Kevin about Kristy. "I can't explain it guys. I know we've only just met, but you read her story... it's like she already knew me. And I feel like I got to know her too. It's like we have all this history together, even though we've only known each other a few hours." He sighed, "I know we should take it slow, but the connection we're feeling is more powerful than anything I've ever felt... it's what I've always dreamed of."

"I know you guys are getting close," Howie said, patting Kevin on the shoulder, "But remember, 'Once' was a just story... a great story, but still just a story. You guys need to get to know each other as people, not as characters."

AJ nodded, "And you might want to slow things down a little in the physical affection department... no matter how good of intentions you guys have, right now there's so much chemistry between you two, you're about ready to spontaneously combust!"
