Chapter 2

Kristy arrived at work an hour before her first patient was scheduled. She turned on the computer in the office she shared with one of the clinic's doctors. She pulled up her email, reading the ones related to work first, saving the personal ones for last so she could enjoy them. She laughed as she read her friend Toni's latest note. Although they'd never met in person, they had been friends for over two years now, since they'd "met" on a message board for Days of Our Lives. Since that time, Kristy had become a devoted fan of Toni's theories and fanfics, and now Toni provided Kristy with valuable input on her own fanfic endeavors. She had even hosted Kristy's story on her website. Kristy replied to the email, promising to send her the first chapters of her new fanfic after the weekend.

She read through a couple email jokes from her friend Chris, and then a couple of messages from names she didn't recognize. This was happening more often... thanks to her fanfic. She sent off quick replies, thanking them for their positive feedback, and then opened a note from someone with an alias of "Frack."

She smiled as she read the message and chuckled to herself as she answered the questions.

(Frack) "There are a few things I wanted to let you know and a few questions I wanted to ask you after I read your story. So here goes:
1. I thought your story was REALLY great! It's probably one of the best fanfics I've ever read. Thanks for setting it in Orlando (my home town). I was really able to identify. Were you really just there ('cause you seemed to really know your way around)?"

(Kristy) "Thanks, I'm glad you enjoyed it! But BEST???? Aw, shucks --blushing--. And yes, I was there in April for a conference and will be back in Dec for another one.

(Frack) "2. Do you actually know Kev, 'cause you seem to have gotten his personality down pat."

(Kristy) "Yeah, I WISH! Unfortunately, I don't know Kev. If I've captured his personality, then it's by luck and wishful thinking on my part."

(Frack) "3. I loved the characters, they seemed so real. I suspect Chris, Mike, Heather, Jessica and Kristy really exist somewhere in Oregon. Do they? Is 'kbutler' (you) the same 'Dr. Kristy Butler' in the story? Are you really 26? (If so, would you ever consider going out with a younger man?)

(Kristy) "Wow! That was several questions! First: yes, the characters are based on my real friends here in Oregon who are TRULY characters. Second: yes, 'kbutler' and Dr. Butler are one and the same. Third: I AM 26 and, Fourth: It depends! Are we talkin' (in BSB terms) B-Rok younger or Nick younger? While I'd prefer Kevin older (!), I could possibly handle Brian. Nick's a cutie, but too young for me."

(Frack) "4. I pulled out my 'Night Out With the Backstreet Boys' video and listened to 'Kevin's Solo' while I read 'Once Upon a Time' (the song) and was SO impressed at how well it fit. Did you REALLY write those lyrics? Have you sent them to Kevin?"

(Kristy) "Thanks! Yes, I did write them and I have to say I'm pretty proud of them. Like in the story, I wrote the first part quite awhile ago and sent a letter with the lyrics to Kevin. (Pathetic, I know.) Of course, I doubt they ever got close to him. While I was writing the story, the two new verses just sort of wrote themselves... I guess Kevin inspired me."

(Frack) "5. I'm in Europe on business and I get bored sometimes. Are you writing any more stories? (PLEASE!) Will you write back to me? (Pretty please!)"

(Kristy) "Yep, I'm starting to work on a new one. I'll send it to ya when I get a couple of chapters done. As for writing back to you... hmmm, I don't know... OK. Here ya go!"

Nick wandered out of his room to find Brian at the computer. He looked up and grinned sheepishly, "I just sent Kristy a message."

"So, didn't I tell you?" Nick smiled, seeing the pile of pages of the story by the couch.

"That was so good! I like how you could totally picture the characters and felt like you knew them." Brian gushed.

"Didn't she just have Kevin down perfectly?" Nick laughed. "I'd swear she knew him."

"I know," Brian added. "She was pretty right on with all of us. And I liked how it was romantic and sexy without being graphic."

"Yeah, I thought it was so good." Nick said as he checked his email. "Woo hoo!! She wrote back!" He laughed as he read her responses, until he got to the part about dating a younger man. "Oh crap."

"What?" Brian said, looking over Nick's shoulder at the computer.

"She wouldn't date me... 'Nick's a cutie, but too young...'," Nick grumbled. "She'd date you though... but she'd prefer Kevin."

"Yeah, no duh!" Brian laughed. "Since the whole story WAS about him."

Kristy checked her email one last time before she left work for the weekend. "Frick and Frack" she smiled. For three weeks she'd been emailing back and forth with two young men... or so they said. Kristy doubted very much that they really had been in Europe on business, but they made her laugh and she enjoyed their letters back and forth. She chuckled as she read the chatterings of the two, thinking they must be pretty entertaining to be around. She wrote back and signed off.

"So, are you guys glad to be back home? I bet it's good to see your friends and families again. Do you guys have to go back to work right away or do you get to take some time off... although, I'd say Europe should count as a vacation. ;-p Well, I'm done with work for the week, going camping with some friends... we leave tonight. So while you're in the hot Florida sun, think of me lazing by the lake out in the wilds of the Pacific Northwest.

Talk to you soon,
Angel of Music"
