Chapter 7

Kristin smiled as a glass of red wine was placed in front of her. She looked up to see Kevin standing in front of her, holding another glass.

"You look lonely, can I join you?" he asked.

"I'm sorry. I'm waiting for someone," she joked.

Kevin laughed and sat down next to her. She looked stunning; he couldn't believe how beautiful she looked.

"Congratulations on the award Kevin," she said.

"Thank you. I'm so sorry that this is the very first chance we've had to talk. Amanda told me y'all drove into New York in the middle of the night. Are you nuts?"

"After I got them at the airport we decided that we had nothing better to do, so we left then. And in regards to your apology, it wasn't needed. I understand. I've been kept company."

"It's really not ok, but thanks for being so understanding."

"That's why I'm here," she put her hand on his and squeezed it.

His hand tingled where she touched it. He took a sip of wine to calm his nerves.

"Is something wrong Kev?" she asked.

It frightened him how well she could read his mind. He shook his head and glanced at the ring on her left hand.

"That's beautiful," he said, pointing to the ring.

"It's a claddagh ring. My grandmother gave it to me when I was 10. She got it in Ireland, which makes it special to me. I never take it off," she said.

"It has extra meaning to you."

She nodded. He still looked perplexed.

"Kev, don't say nothing's wrong. What is it?" she asked.

"Oh K, I'm just wiped. Sometimes I wish I could run away from this all. But there's nowhere to hide!" he laughed gently.

"There's a place for you to hide," she said.

"Where?"

"Hide at my place. Even if for a day. Kevin you're always welcome."

"Really? That would mean so much to me."

"Of course," she smiled.

He rested his hand on her cheek. "You are a princess. I might have to take you up on that offer."

Her cheek burned where he touched it. She gasped.

"What is it?" he asked.

"The wine, it must have gotten to me," she fumbled for an excuse.

"You didn't have any wine yet," he pointed out.

She grabbed the glass and took a gulp. "Yes I did,"

They were both confused. What was going on? Kevin glanced up at a familiar song.

"They're playing our song, and I'll guarantee someone is behind this," he said, standing up, offering his hand. "Shall we?"

Kristin nodded and went to the center of the dance floor with Kevin. Brian caught her eye and winked at her. It had been set up. Kevin counted it off, and they began to dance. For the first time, Kevin actually listened to the lyrics. It was uncanny how it fit them.

And if you said this life ain't good enough

I would give my world to lift you up

I could change my life to better suit your mood

Cause you're so smooth

And it's just like the ocean under the moon

It's the same as the emotion that I get from you

You got the kinda lovin' that can be so smooth

Give me your heart, make it real, or else forget about it

"Smooth": Santana

All eyes were once again on them as they danced across the floor. He held her closer, making the Latin dance even more seductive. Kristin couldn't catch her breath, but it was not the dancing that was making her so.

When the song finally ended, Kristin's eyes flushed with tears as she heard the opening chords of the next song.

"Brian....." she whispered.

"What?" Kevin asked.

"He did it again. Listen," she made him listen to the music.

"You fill up my senses....." the music played. Kevin's eyes widened as he recognized the melody. He pulled Kristin even closer in his arms. It was at that exact moment that he realized that he and Kristin were not "just friends."

Brian looked at his cousin and Kristin dancing and smiled. It had worked. He wouldn't have to push the two together any longer. From this point on, they would do just fine by themselves.
