Send Her My Love

Chapter 3

Its been so long since Ive seen her face. You say shes doin fine. I still recall a sad cafe; how it hurt so bad to see her cry. I didnt want to say good-bye...

American countryside rushed by. Nick smiled a little. It was good to be back in the states. Coming back was always like coming home, no matter where they were. It also meant that he was closer to Heather.

Heather... He didnt think about her as often as he used to and the pain wasnt so sharp, but he still couldnt date another girl without seeing her face. He even found himself dating girls who reminded him of her.

That conversation had been their last. He hadnt heard her voice or seen her face in a year. Howie still kept in touch with her, but Nick had quit asking. The last time he had Howie told him that she was doing fine and had answered the unspoken question as gently as he could: she was seeing other people. They had broken up and he didnt expect her to remain single, but the knowledge still hurt.

He wondered if she missed him. Did she still think about him the way he thought about her? He had never really wanted to break up with her, but at the time it had seemed like the right thing to do. She had needed more than he could give her. With a sigh he leaned back in the seat and lost himself in the scenery.

The same hotel, the same old room. Im on the road again. She needed so much more than I could give. We knew our love could not pretend. Broken hearts can always mend...

Flopping down on the hotel bed Nick closed his eyes. Hotels were all the same after a while. When they were first touring it had been different, but the novelty wore off quickly. Sometimes he longed for his own bed back in Florida, but he wouldnt give up what he had for anything in the world.

Guilt flushed over him. Why wouldnt Heathers memory leave him alone? This was insane. He had had it narrowed down to once in a while. Why was she haunting him every day now for a week? He thought he had it under control.

He shouldnt be feeling guilty either! Granted it had been his idea to break it off first and he was the one who called but hadnt she agreed with him? Hadnt she told him that she needed more than he could give her? It hadnt been all on him.

The idea was that they find other people who could give them what they needed. Nick knew that it would hurt when he called her but wasnt time supposed to heal all wounds? It was better than pretending that everything was fine when obviously it wasnt. With troubled thoughts Nick fell into a restless sleep.

Callin out her name Im dreamin. Reflections of a face Im seein. Its her voice that keeps on haunting me.

Breathing heavily Nick sat up in bed, his dream still fresh in his mind. It was her again. Had he called out her name? God he hoped not. This was driving him insane. How much more could he take?

In every crowd he thought he saw her face. In the wind and murmurs of a crowd he kept hearing her voice. It had been a while since she had haunted him so completely. Why now of all times? Why now after he thought he had begun to finally heal?

Suddenly a realization hit him. He checked the date on his watch to make sure. It was. Today was a year exactly from the day they had broken up. A year. In that time he had failed completely to find anyone who could complete him so fully. Someone who understood him so well.

He wanted her back. It was impossible, but true nonetheless. Could it work this time? Nick knew that he had changed. He hoped for the better. Had she changed? Could they handle it this time? Maybe, maybe not. He felt that this time he could. Having her, even through separation, was better than living without her. Would she feel the same?

Suddenly a thought hit him. What if she had found someone else? What if she didnt miss him at all? The thought hurt, but he had to admit that it was a possibility. That was a chance he had to take.

Send her, send her my love. Roses never fade. Memories remain. Send her, send her my love.

Nick weighed the possibilities. Finally he came to a conclusion. He had to know. More importantly he had to let her know that he still cared about her and if there was the slightest chance...well, that was what he had to go on.

Donning a baseball cap and glasses he headed down to the flower shop. Once there he ordered a single red rose. On the attached note he simply wrote: I love you. He hoped she would understand...
