Chapter 45

Howie toweled off and slipped on one of their Nike warm up suits. He wandered around his room, feeling empty and a little lost, trying to organize his thoughts and feelings. He paused as he heard a soft rapping on the door. He opened it to find Kristy standing there, a warm, empathetic smile on her pretty face. Hey D, would you like some company?

Howie welcomed her into his room, pulling up a chair for her as he sat back down on his bed. Does Kev know youre here? Kristy nodded and smiled. Im surprised he let you out of his sight!

Kristy giggled, Hell survive for a little while. She paused, watching Howie closely. Wanna talk about it?

Howie shrugged. Im not sure I can put it into words. I miss her so much."

"You know she's absolutely heartbroken that she can't be here with you." He nodded. "She's crazy about you."

"The feeling's mutual. Although there was a time I thought you and I might..."

Kristy's eyes widened. "When was this?" Something about Howie's smile told her he wasn't serious.

"Oh, for about two seconds when we first met."

"Then what happened?"

"Two things actually. I saw Kevin glaring at me and I saw Cheryl... then I was done." Kristy and Howie smiled at each other. "Your turn. Did you ever think you and I would hook up?"

Kristy shook her head and grinned. "Never even crossed my mind."

"Ouch."

She giggled. "At the time I was too focused on Cheryl cutting off all the circulation to my hand!" Howie laughed, recalling how Cheryl had recounted her initial reaction to first seeing him. "And then there WAS that friend of yours."

"Tall guy? Used to look all serious most of the time? Now gets REAL grumpy when he hasn't seen you in awhile?" Kristy smiled broadly. "Yeah, I think I know the one."

"So, when did you know?"

Howie shook his head. "I was a little slow. Not because I didn't like Cher, 'cause I did... from the first moment I saw her. Actually, I think I liked her too much... it scared me a little."

Kristy smiled understandingly. "I think Cheryl felt the same way."

Howie nodded. "But not you and Kev. You two figured it out right away, didn't you?"

Kristy smiled and shrugged. Even just talking about Kevin made her heart beat a little faster. "He's my soulmate."

"So, when did YOU know?"

Kristy's smile brightened and Howie couldn't help but smile back. Kevin was right; she had that effect on people. "Well, I knew I was attracted to him way before we ever met." Howie grinned as he thought of the girls' posters. "But when our eyes locked that first time..." Kristy sighed as she remembered back to that magical night. "I just felt this connection... that's when I started to fall in love with him."

"Is it what you'd thought it'd be?"

Kristy contemplated the question. "Well, I don't think I could've ever anticipated how challenging being a 'BSG' could be sometimes."

Howie nodded. "This job isn't very relationship-friendly at times."

"And you and Kev have to deal with the fact that Cheryl and I have our own demanding careers."

"But we're both so proud of you... even if we do get a little selfish once in awhile."

Now it was Kristy's turn to nod in agreement. "I'd say we have our own selfish-moments on occasion. We miss you guys too. And sometimes I wish I didn't have to share my boyfriend with millions of other people, ya know? She smiled ruefully as she thought about the lingerie from some of Kevins fans. But all things considered, I'd say we're all doing pretty good at making it work."

"I'm sure Kev would agree with me... you guys are worth the effort."

"We feel the same way. The good definitely outweighs the bad. And I know what Kevin and I have is better than anything I'd ever even dreamed of."

Howie smiled at her words and the expression on her face. "Do I look as blissfully happy when I'm talking about Cheryl as you do when you're talking about Kev?"

Kristy grinned. "Absolutely!"

"I guess that's what happens when you find your soulmate."

*~*~*

Kristy returned to their room to find Kevin unpacking her bags. She walked up to him and wrapped her arms around him from behind. He turned in her arms and grinned down at her. "I love you so much. You know that, right?" she said with a bright smile.

Kevin kissed her softly. "I believe you've mentioned it before. This wouldn't have anything to do with me unpacking your things for you, would it?"

"Nope. Although it is awfully sweet of you."

"Not entirely... I was dying to see what sexy little nighties you packed!"

Kristy giggled and kissed him lightly. "Like it matters!" she teased back.

Kevin chuckled and pulled her closer, the kiss becoming more sensual. Without breaking the kiss, he picked her up and carried her to the bed. Kevin could sense Kristy wanted to talk, and forced himself to not let things progress too far. Kristy sighed as Kevin pulled back and brushed a strand of golden blond hair off her forehead. "What are you thinking about?"

Kristy smiled. "Do you know that you're the first man I've ever actually answered that question honestly for? I always hated it when guys would ask that, because I was never willing to tell them... either because I knew it wasn't what they wanted to hear or because I'd feel too vulnerable if I did tell them."

Kevin smiled back at her. As close as they were, and as much as they knew about each other, Kevin loved that they were always learning new things about each other and themselves. "But not with me?" He already knew she was always honest with him. Honesty and trust were very important to both of them.

Kristy shook her head. "No, because I love and trust you completely, so I know I can tell you anything."

Kevin marveled at the woman in his arms. His love for her grew each day that she was in his life. "So, what are you thinking?"

"Well, Howie and I were talking about how challenging relationships in this business can be, and how Cheryl and I both have our own careers too. I guess I was just wondering if you ever wished I didn't work."

Kevin smiled as he pulled her onto his lap. "I'll admit I wish I could spend every waking - and sleeping - moment with you... but I couldn't - and wouldn't - ask you to give up your job for me. One of the many things that I love about you is your drive and dedication to your career. I do hope that someday you'll cut back when we have kids, but until then, I'll settle for weekends and vacations and whenever else I can see you."

"Kids?" Kristy whispered, her eyes shining with unshed tears.

Kevin nodded. He knew that Kristy shared his love of family and wanted one of her own someday. They'd talked about it in the abstract, but had never really attached the concept to themselves. "Yes, kids. Our kids."

Kristy threw her arms around Kevin's neck and hugged him tightly as she covered his face with kisses. "Ask me what I'm thinking now," she whispered suggestively as she started unbuttoning his shirt.

Kevin chuckled and did as she asked, groaning as she answered him... completely honestly.
