Chapter 39

Kevin slipped the special CD hed made into the portable battery-operated stereo he had packed, and finished lighting a few more candles. Kristy walked into the doorway from the bathroom and stopped.

The perfection of it all, including the man standing in the center of the room, took her breath away. Dozens of candles and the fire in the fireplace provided the only light for the room, casting a warm glow on the bed, walls, and ceiling. A bottle of Kristys favorite wine from Oregon sat chilling in a silver bucket. From the stereo, a soft instrumental Kevin had written began playing, filling the room with its haunting beauty. And then there was the love of her life.

Kevin turned to Kristy. The rich green of his light silk pajamas matched his eyes exactly and they hung enticingly against his muscular body. Kristy stepped further into the room, drawn in by him.

Kristy. Kevin stood there frozen, unable to speak except to say her name. Kristy looked like an angel in her plum satin negligee. She approached him, her eyes holding his. He wasnt sure if it was the candlelight, the purple of her nightgown, or the significance of this evening, but hed never seen her eyes look as beautiful as they did right then.

He pulled her into his arms, the smell of her light perfume overwhelming his senses. He lowered his head and drew her lips close for a deep, sensual kiss. Their mouths and tongues continued to taste and explore each other as their hands grew restless and began to touch and caress each other.

Breathlessly, they broke apart, realizing they had the entire night ahead of them and their entire lives, for that matter. Kevin poured Kristy a glass of wine, taking the opportunity to watch her. Her skin glowed in the candlelight, and he knew from moments before that it really was as satiny soft as it looked.

Kristy gazed at Kevins chiseled face, memorizing every line and angle. She raised her hand and ran it through his soft, black hair. She let her hand caress his neck, and then traced the line of his firm jaw, her fingers feeling the softness of his goatee. She lifted her hand further, her thumb finding the spot in his cheek where the dimples she so loved hid.

Kevin turned his face and kissed the palm of her hand, his eyes holding hers the entire time. The piano music Kevin had composed faded into another song, and Kristys eyes widened as she recognized the familiar tune. Kevin pulled her into his arms, their faces close as he sang along with John Michael Montgomerys words.

I like the feel of your name on my lips,
And I like the sound of your sweet gentle kiss,
The way that your fingers run through my hair,
And how your scent lingers even when youre not there.

Kevin felt the significance of the words. He acutely remembered her kisses and the feel of her hands in his hair and on his face from moments ago. He liked how he could always still smell Kristys perfume on his clothes after theyd have been together. Not only was she everything he had always dreamed of in a partner and friend, but it was also all the little things that made him love her the way he did. He felt blessed to have met her and thanked God daily for having her in his life.

And I like the way your eyes dance when you laugh,
And how you enjoy your two-hour bath,
The way you convinced me to dance in the rain
With everyone watching like we were insane.

Kristy smiled at how well they songs lyrics described them. She knew she and Kevin sometimes challenged each other, but she also knew they complemented and balanced each other perfectly. He could make her relax when she got too stressed with work, and she helped him take himself less seriously and enjoy the simple pleasures in life... like long baths and laughing at yourself.

But I love the way you love me...
Strong and wild, slow and easy,
Heart and soul, so completely,
I love the way you love me.

Kevin pulled her closer and kissed her softly, his hands gently caressing her back through the soft satin of her negligee. The thin material of their pajamas provided very little by way of a barrier, and in fact, seemed to make each others touch more sensual. All of their senses were on overload from their nearness and the music, candlelight, and mood of the evening.

I like the way you take ol Jerry Lee apart,
You roll your eyes when Im slightly off key,
And I like the innocent way that you cry,
At sappy old movies youve seen hundreds of times.

Kevin and Kristy both softly laughed at the last lines... only in their case, both of them would cry. Kristy remembered the first time theyd watched Youve Got Mail together. As Tom Hanks told Meg Ryan how much he wished theyd met under different circumstances... he wouldve asked her for coffee, or drinks, or dinner, or a movie... for as long as we both shall live, Kristy hadnt felt embarrassed about crying, because as she'd reached for a tissue, she'd seen the tears in Kevins eyes too. Howie and Cheryl had simply shook their heads and mumbled something about them being perfect for each other. They were.

But I love the way you love me...
Strong and wild, slow and easy,
Heart and soul, so completely,
I love the way you love me.

Kristy felt perfectly content in Kevins arms. She knew it was right... that they were right. She loved and trusted Kevin completely. She leaned forward and brushed her lips against his.

And I could list a million things
I love to like about you
But they all come down to one reason
I could never live without you.

Kevin knew they were meant to be together... he guessed hed known it since that first night theyd met at Pleasure Island. From the first time hed seen her across the room, shed taken his breath away with her beauty. Later when shed looked him squarely in the eye and told him she liked the Backstreet Boys music, hed been impressed by the fact that she didnt back down to him. That night hed known he liked her... hed liked her style, her sweetness, and her spirit. Hed liked how she danced and how she felt in his arms. Hed liked how shed blush and how shed look at him, eyes twinkling, like they shared a special secret. Hed really liked kissing her and how she kissed him back. That was the night hed started to fall in love with her, and now he couldnt imagine his life without her.

I love the way you love me...
Strong and wild, slow and easy,
Heart and soul, so completely,
I love the way you love me.
Oh baby, I love the way you love me.

I love you, they said in unison before their lips met in a perfect kiss... and they spent the rest of the night loving each other.
