Dreaming Of You

Chapter 1

"I dreamed of him again," I whispered to my best friend, Elaine, as we sat down to lunch.

"Oh, Lexi . . ." She sighed, and changed the subject. "How do you think you did on the math quiz?"

I shrugged. "Probably a B. I actually understand what we're doing in this chapter." I grinned at her. "You?"

"I forgot to study, so I probably failed it," Elaine grumbled.

I laughed. "You've never failed a math quiz -- or test -- in your life. What makes you think it's going to change now?"

Elaine grinned at me. "Shh, saying you failed usually makes you get a better grade. It's Murphy's Law."

I laughed. "Right."

"So has anyone asked you to the prom yet?" she asked absentmindedly, picking at the cafeteria lunch.

"Actually, Jeff asked me this morning."

Elaine looked up, startled. "Oh no, Lexi, please tell me you did not reject him like you did the others."

I glanced at my feet sheepishly. "Okay, I won't tell you."

Elaine groaned. "Alexandra!"

I hate it when people call me by my full name, and she knew it.

"You've got to stop doing that! You've got to go with someone, and almost all of the hottest guys have asked you so far!"

"But what about . . ."

"Lexi, come on, be realistic here. Just because you've been dreaming of some guy does not mean he's going to show up here and ask you to the prom. Don't you think you'd see him by now if he went to this high school?"

I sighed. "I know, but . . . he's perfect. I don't know how I could go with anyone else."

Elaine looked at me pleadingly. "Look, Lex . . . can we make a deal?"

I hesitated. "I guess so . . ."

"Okay." She put down her fork and looked at me straight in the eyes. "If your dream date doesn't show up by the end of the week, will you PLEASE say yes to the next guy that asks you?"

I looked at my food. I knew it was highly unlikely that the guy from my dreams would show up, but something kept telling me he would. But the senior prom was at the end of next week . . . if I didn't get a date, I probably wouldn't go, and I really did not want to miss out on the biggest high school dance of my life. I tucked a strand of my light brown hair behind my ear and looked up at Elaine.

"Okay."

"Thank you!" she exclaimed. "Don't worry, I'm sure you'll have fun with whoever you go with."

I smiled. "I know."

Before we knew it, the bell rang and lunch period was over.

"See you in chemistry," Elaine called over her shoulder as we hurried to our next period class.

"See ya!"
