Chapter 11 - A Heart-to-Heart Talk with Nick

Brian drove himself back to the BSB beach house. When he got there, he opened the front door with his key and called out a "hello" to see if anyone was home. No one answered back, so he decided to crash on the couch. Though it was only 11:30 AM, Brian decided to take a nap. Just as he was dozing off, the sound of the door opening woke him up.

"Hi, Brian. Where were you all night?" Nick asked in a cheerful voice.

"Hey...I was with Danielle...at her place."

"Really? Whaddya do there?" Nick asked, his curiosity piqued.

''Nick. Must you know everything?" Brian asked curtly.

"Well, I'm just interested, that's all."

"I proposed to her."

"You WHAT?!!"

"You heard me-I said I proposed to Danielle."

"Brian, you barely know her for a whole week, man. What did she say?"

"She didn't accept it."

"Oh. Hey, don't feel bad," Nick said in a gentle voice.

"I rushed things. I got desperate. No man in his right mind asks a lady to marry him after only the second date. You know, now that I think about it, the whole thing didn't really seem right. I mean, we were at the pizza parlor, all dressed up, the both of us, and when I popped the question, she ran right out the door."

Nick laughed helplessly.

Brian gave him a dirty look.

"Sorry," Nick muttered.

"Yeah, you're a real comfort," Brian said sarcastically.

"Brian, I may not be the most experienced person when it comes to love, but the way I figure it, if you and Danielle truly are meant to be together, then your relationship WILL stand the test of time, and no matter what, in the end, your love for each other will remain unchallenged and unwavering. So just hang in there, Bri. And hasn't it been said that absence makes the heart grow fonder anyway?"

"That was deep, Nick. Thanks for the word of wisdom. At least one of us has still got some sense left in him."

"Brian. Don't be so hard on yourself," Nick said sternly.

"When you've messed up like I did yesterday, believe me, as much as you wish it could just disappear--it doesn't. It lingers on your mind forever. Or at least for a long, long time anyway."

"Danielle loves you. And she wants to be with you. The only problem is you don't know each other long enough-or well enough-to commit yourselves to something so permanent. That and the fact that you refuse to overlook her rejection-as painful as that is-and move on."

"I only need some time for it to pass. But thanks for being here for me. I really appreciate your caring. "

"I did say I'd be there when you needed me."

"Despite all the pranks you pull, you can be really mature sometimes. Did ya know that?"

"Hey. I'm just knocking some sense back into you," Nick said, smiling.
