Chapter Five

*************

He let her go, while her eyes were still closed. He left the room in quick strides. The further away he got the clearer things became. She didn’t seem to realize he’d left. She opened her eyes to find herself alone in the kitchen. She wasn’t sure if what had just happened was real or not. She let out a shaky breath and went back to her room, to think.

Kenshin did his wash in a bit of a temper. He didn’t understand why he couldn’t have her. Well he knew the ‘reasons’ but those were becoming too weak to hold him for much longer, specially after what he’d seen today. Sparks of amber burned in his eyes as he looked in the direction of her room.

“Ya gonna burn a whole?”

Kenshin closed his eyes, he really didn’t need this right now. “What is it Sano?” His rurouni tone was gone but he didn’t care, not today and certainty not right now.

“Interesting, are you finally getting frustrated.” Sano mused. Kenshin’s back stiffened again. “Took ya long enough. Almost four years.” Sano continued on.

Kenshin wrung out a gi. He snapped the water out of it and hung it up. He looked down at the last article of clothing in his tub. Her favorite yukata, he wondered if she’d touched herself while she wore that too. He shook his head trying to clear his mind. He’d gone over this already, childish fantasies. His eyes drifted back to her room as he stared intently.

Sano looked amused. Something must have happened. “Did ya walk in on her again?” Sano grinned.

Kenshin turned around so fast he startled Sano. The restraints held however and Kenshin didn’t proceed with the half thought action of slamming Sano to the ground. He gave Sano a stern look which looked much more like glare from Sano’s point of view.

This time when Kenshin turned around he didn’t have to ignore Sano. Sano stepped back cautiously, looking over his shoulder as he stepped inside the house. Kenshin’s thoughts centered around one thing and one thing only. How to avoid her for the next week, at least till he fortified his restraints. Till he gained enough will power to be left alone with her without worrying about attacking her.

*************

Her eyes snapped open, she found herself in a darkened room She was fully awake even though it was still night time. She half rose on her elbows, listening intently. 'How odd,' she thought. There’s no noise.

A rustling sound came from the room next door. His room. “Kenshin.” She whispered as she got up.

"Kenshin" She said as she knocked on his room but there was no answer. Maybe he was having a nightmare in which case it was important that she wake him up. She slid the door open and saw him tangled in his bed sheets. 'He hadn't even bother to change his clothes, I guess he was really tired' "Kenshin you need to wake up," she spoke as she knelt next to his bed and shook him a bit. He looked so peaceful she couldn't help wanting to touch him. So she did, she brushed his bangs away and whispered his name. His eyes snapped opened so quickly she didn't have time to be startled. She needed a reason as to why she was in his room and quickly, "You sounded like you were having a nightmare, I thought it would be best to wake you up. Are you ok?" Her hand was still on his forehead slowly making its way to his chin caressing his cheek in the process. Realization came slowly as things finally clicked in her head, she had been caressing him and he'd been starring at her. Her ears started to burn till she felt her whole face aflame. He looked at her and almost smiled. And then he said something that almost made her faint. "I want you."

She gasped turning her eyes to meet his. But they were not the rurouni’s they were an icy blue like that of . . . ."I have to go." She half stuttered as she got to her feet and fled from the room.

Kaoru’s eyes opened slowly. ‘Weird,’ she thought. Her dreams were either strange or way too graphic. She still wasn’t sure which she liked best, since they all featured Kenshin. He’d been avoiding her for almost a week, ever since he‘d . . . he‘d smelled her. She knew that had to be it. He’d been too forward and now he was embarrassed. The reason seemed highly unlikely though. The whole situation seemed impossible, Kenshin would never have acted like that, yet he had. And then there was the change in his speech pattern. It was like in her dream. He was acting like he did in her dreams. He couldn’t act like that. That would only make things worse because there was going to come a time when she wouldn’t be able to tell them apart and she might act out something on the real Kenshin. With a heavy sigh she decided it was time to get up. She had a teenage boy to go harass.

An evil smile framed her face as she slinked her way through the house and into Yahiko’s room.

“Tsubame.” He whispered.

‘Oh,’ she thought as raccoon ears appeared on her head. Now she had something to burn him with if he ever mentioned the one dream he’d over heard that one time. She went back outside, closing the door so she could make a grand entrance.

She waited for a moment before she slid the door open with a bang. “Good morning Yahiko. Ready for some training?” She asked, satisfied at his shocked face.

Yahiko groaned and laid back onto the futon face down. “It’s too early you ugly hag.”

“Perhaps you need incentive.” She responded coolly. She yanked on his blanket and ran away with it. “Stupid Kaoru.” He screamed as he made his way down the hall. She ran laughing the whole way. That midget wouldn’t catch her unless she wanted him to. She looked around to see, he wasn’t after her anymore. She knew he was a tricky little monster though. So she eased her pace down and began to walk quietly. She turned the corner and into the kitchen. Her evil smile grew wider as she spotted a bucket full of water. She picked it up and waited around the corner. She didn’t have to wait long. She jumped from her spot and tossed water in his face. She blinked back in surprise. She’d gotten more than Yahiko, she grinned. “Sano.”

Sano wiped his face looking at her threateningly while she laughed. He lunged after her and she ran. They chased her out to the yard where she spotted her haven, that made her run faster. She dashed behind Kenshin who was hanging up a blanket. She held him by the shoulders, using him as a shield. Kenshin looked at the other two. He wanted to ask why they were dripping wet but the answer was obvious. A smile touched his lips at the expression of the other two.

Sano and Yahiko stood in front of Kenshin glaring at Kaoru. She smiled sweetly at Kenshin while smug satisfaction played on her features when she looked at the other two. “I think I’ll stay here and help you Kenshin.” She said as she looked at the other two. Kenshin shook his head lightly in amusement. “Of course Kaoru-dono.” He answered.

“Lucky Kenshin was here.” Yahiko muttered as he went back inside.

Sano however stood there still, watching her. He made a leap for her and she stumbled back grabbing onto the water basin as she fell back. Kenshin grabbed her by an arm and by the waist but it seemed too late. Tears sprang to her eyes as her hand began to drip blood. Kenshin kicked the water basin out of the way, spilling the water on the ground. He brought her hand closer to him, she’d cut it on the side of the basin. “It’s ok. He said soothingly as he led her into the kitchen so he could clean her hand and bandage it properly. She whimpered as he squeezed her hand.

Sano stood out there in confusion. ‘I thought the battoussai only came out when there was danger,’ he thought as he followed them inside. He wanted to make sure he’d seen what he thought he’d seen. Golden eyes were not something he just imagined.
