Yosemite

by Soumya Kedlaya

A bird am I, seeing flat land
With trees looking like broccoli in the sand

The clouds in the sky white as snow

The roaring wind that makes the leaves blow

And bare branches which seem near

That look like antlers of a deer,

Like a castle, the Yosemite mountains are

That seems like it is flying far

It appears that a baby mountain

Is calling for help near the fountain

I must now go to my nest

And sleep deeply to get rest.

Soumya wrote this poem during the 2001 National Poetry Month Contribution organized by Barnes and Noble Booksellers.  Hers was one among the few poems selected to be read in front of a group of people. She was awarded the certificate of excellence.
