Fujitsu launches MVNO service in Japan

TOKYO-Fujitsu, a leading telecommunications vender in Japan, on 1 October launched mobile virtual network operator (MVNO) services based on PHS networks owned and run by DDI Pocket. Fujitsu's MVNO service, Mobile Plus, offers two programs-32 kilobits per second (kbps) service for 5,000 yen (US$40.65) per month and 28 kbps service for 8,500 yen (US$69.11).
NTT Communications, a long-distance and overseas telephone business unit of NTT Group, is going to launch MVNO service also based on DDI Pocket's PHS networks on 18 October. NTT Communications' service will be an optional service for the carrier's Internet Protocol (IP)-virtual private network (VPN) services.
The mobile access service for IP-VPN costs 6500 yen (US$52.85) per month. MVNO services became available in Japan last year in the wake of opening DDI Pocket's PHS networks. Currently, five carriers are providing MVNO service using DDI Pocket's networks.
