| Species of Hamster Syrian Also known as the teddy bear hamster, fancy hamster and black bear hamster. These names are just fancier names in which pet stores may be able to get more money out of you. The teddy bear hamster is a long haired hamster. The black bear hamster is just a black colour hamster, and Im not sure what a 'fancy hamster' is, all I know it's a very well known scam. Also, Syrians must NOT be kept together, they're extremely solitary and prefer to live alone, and its been know for Syrians to fight to death. Note from Kane A Fancy Hamster is just another name for a Syrian hamster. Female Syrians come into heat every four days, to test whether your female is in heat just stroke or blow her on her back. She should freeze if shes in heat. Dwarf Russian Campbells Dwarves are highly sociable and prefer to live in pairs or groups. Although in some cases they may fight. When put in a clean cage they may fight for dominance, this is natural but if blood is drawn they must be separated as one may get killed by the other. Should really be introduced at a young age. Winter Whites These are a species which obviously change their coat colour in winter, they must not be mixed with any other species of dwarfs. They also may fight for dominance when put in a new cage or introduced. But it's natural, if blood is drawn, please split them up. Winter whites are also sociable and must be in pairs or groups. Roborosvkis Not as common as Campbells or WW, but they're highly sociable, very small and fast, also, they will too fight for dominance, so if blood is drawn please separate. Chinese hamsters Chinese hamsters are not sociable, they prefer to live alone, and this species is also known as the 'mouse-like' hamster for its longer tail. Never put different species of hamster in the same cage. Written for Rodent Retreat by Kayla Lewis |
