"Icons, Curiosities, Spirit Houses"
Cynthia Brody, Christopher Bales and Lee Kavaljian
Kudos to Kaneko Exhibit at
American River College

When Cynthia Brody was contacted by a student at American River College asking if she would like to exhibit in the school's gallery she was somewhat surprised but very casual in accepting.

It was quite the pleasant surprise when the artist, who has been exhibiting for 25 years, entered the Kaneko Gallery on Tuesday and found a most professionally curated and hung show. Even more surprising was the fact that this was the first show completely organized by the students of Diane Richey-Ward's Gallery class.
Cynthia Brody, "Woman Icon" Mixed Media
The class scanned the Internet as well as hundreds of slides to select the three artists in this exhibit: Christopher Bales, Cynthia Brody and Lee Kavaljian.

The opening was brimming with enthusiastic students who asked insightful questions of the artists and were rightfully proud of their accomplishment.

The artists were amazed at the consistency of symbolism and even found that they had used similar objects in their assemblages.
Christopher Bales, "Untitled" Mixed Media
It seems the whole process of selecting artists, combining their work and determining the way it was presented was similar to the processes the artists had used in the making of their own work.

Largely this was a process using artistic knowledge and intuitive response. The result was a show the students and artists could be proud of and one which the public will find compelling.

Themes include the female experience, relationships, impact of the church on individuals and the spirit houses of Eastern tradition.
Lee Kavaljian, "Rain Spirit House" Stoneware
The exhibit, "Icons, Curiosities, Spirit Houses", runs until December 20 at American River College, 4700 College Oak Drive, Sacramento.
