The legendary Merlin was the forerunner of all the wizards of fiction, from Gandalf to Harry Potter. The historical Merlin seems to have been something very different but equally mysterious: a druid.

History is written by the victors; this can make it hard to get a clear picture of the people on the losing side. When the Romans conquered the Celts and Ancient Britons, they gave unflattering descriptions of the druids. Some sources describe the druids as bloodthirsty barbarians who were addicted to human sacrifice. Others maintain that they were gentle and peaceful, and that they derived their authority from being in touch with nature.

There are a few things we can say for certain. Druids:

• saw mistletoe as a sacred plant with healing powers

• held ceremonies in oak groves

• practised divination and believed they could foretell the future

Their powers of divination underpinned the druids' authority. Their supposed ability to foretell the future made the druids a vital source of information, equally able to advise the community on when to start the harvesting and the king on when to go to war. Like Arthur's adviser, Merlin, the druids wielded a power based on their superior insight into the workings of the universe.

Wizardry as we know it is deeply marked by druidical practices. But the druids themselves had roots in a truly ancient and mysterious form of magic: shamanism

The sources from which TH White's Merlin was drawn tell this story. In Geoffrey of Monmouth's 12th-century History of the Kings of Britain, Merlin first appears as an adviser to the 5th-century British king, Vortigern, and his successor, Ambrose; Ambrose in turn is followed by his brother Uther, whose son is King Arthur. This may explain the depiction of Merlin as an old man; supposedly he was born in 460CEand died in 580, not bad going for the Dark Ages. This Merlin was the illegitimate son of a Welsh princess, who had supposedly been visited in the night by a demon.

The mystery of his parentage may explain both Merlin's supernatural powers and his visionary gifts. As a boy, Merlin was nearly made a human sacrifice by King Vortigern, who had been told that only the sacrifice of a child with no father would prevent his castle from collapsing. Merlin was taken to the site, where he said that Vortigern's problems actually stemmed from two dragons, one red and one white, who were fighting under the foundations; only the victory of the red dragon would end the battle. Merlin saved his life with this prophecy, which cleverly combined clairvoyancy with politics: the red dragon represented Wales, the white dragon stood for the Saxon invaders.
