Rows of tables lower down like steps towards the front of the room.
Each desk is set with a information console, and ports to connect PADDs, or
whatever else is needed. The low lighting in the area makes it a comfortable
enviroment as most of the light is focused on the podium ate the front of the
hall, a large vid screen makes up almost the entire forward wall, able to use
holographic emitters to disguise it as part of the wall while not in use.

[USS Akira:CH1] A male voice: Ma'am?
[Earth <Terra>:CH1] A female voice: This is Admiral Sitak. I am presently
waiting on the CO, XO, and SO of your vessel at Starfleet Academy.
[USS Akira:CH1] A male voice: ah. The Captain and Doctor Haru just left the
ship a little while ago, probably be at the Academy in a few minutes
Hayes has arrived.
[Earth <Terra>:CH1] A female voice: Acknowledged Akira.
[USS Akira:CH1] A male voice: Akira out
Sitak waits quietly and patiently.
... Time drags slowly by ...
Sarah enters from Hall of Insight.
Sarah has arrived.
Haru enters from Hall of Insight.
Haru has arrived.
Sarah wanders in to the lecture hall, "Sorry we're late. We had shuttle
 problems.."
Haru follows in behind Sarah quietly, nodding to the brass... "Sirs."
A female Vulcan stands at the front of the lecture hall with her hands clasped
behind her back. She motions toward a few empty seats in the front for the new
 comers.
Sarah wanders over to the seats,, and sits.
Haru sits down besides Sarah, and takes out his DataPADD. He's ready to take
 notes!
Hayes is standing somewhere in the room, watching, eyeing.
<OOC> Sarah says, "Sitak, you logging for the website?"
<OOC> Sarah says, "Namely, we stopped for a round of poses in passing a new
arrivial, had problems unlocking the shuttle console, had problems with fusion
power not being enough for impulse, then had problems locking the consoles.."
<OOC> Haru o_o
<OOC> Haru says, "Stuck on a Turbolift. That sounds quite the sux."
OOC Sitak nods
OOC Sitak says, "first to address some OOC command issues."
<OOC> Haru o_o;
OOC Sitak says, "TP vs RP.. this is something you guys are gonna have to
 instill in the crew."
OOC Sitak says, "best example I can give is this.."
OOC Sitak says, "you go through school day in and out and have classes and what
 have you.."
<OOC> Sarah nods
OOC Sitak says, "each class etc.. is RP"
OOC Sitak says, "it's the usual mundane stuff"
OOC Sitak says, "but say the football game at the end of the week.."
OOC Sitak says, "that's a TP"
<OOC> Sarah says, "Yeah. TP's are the brief moments of excitement that puncuate
 life in space."
OOC Sitak says, "not every event on the ship has to be the big football game"
OOC Sitak says, "the small moments in school can be fun too"
OOC Sitak says, "like chatting with a friend over lunch.."
<OOC> Haru says, "The patrols."
OOC Sitak says, "or cheating from Ang's test when the teacher isn't looking."
OOC Sitak says, "the routine sweeps by eng with the tricorder on engineering
mode to make sure nothing is broke :P"
OOC Sitak says, "which admin does randomly tear stuff up"
OOC Sitak says, "to simulate RL wear and tear."
<OOC> Haru says, "We have no active engineers. ;_;'"
OOC Sitak says, "but you do have people with Eng skill"
OOC Sitak says, "but we'll get into that in the IC portion"
<OOC> Haru says, "Truedat. O_o"
OOC Sitak says, "You guys are the rolemodels OOCly just as much as ICly"
OOC Sitak says, "if people see you starting RP in mundane areas and still
having fun.. they'll do it to."
<OOC> Sarah shudders to think what the crew will turn out as, in that case.
OOC Sitak says, "it's one of those things that are contageous :)"
<OOC> Haru nods.
OOC Sitak says, "they'll be mini Sarahs :)"
OOC Sitak says, "Anything to add in the OOC side Hayes, before we move to the
 IC discussion?"
OOC Hayes ponders
<OOC> Sarah says, "That'd be horrible, Sitak.. we don't need people with my
temper and tendency to self-despondency running around."
<OOC> Haru says, "But you usually promote the little RP things like she's
 talking about. O_o"
OOC Hayes says, "Nothing to add yet."
OOC Sitak says, "you're a natural leader Sarah.. you just need the skills that
I'm about to teach you :)"
<OOC> Sarah says, "I'm a natural leader on a MUSH. In RL, I'm far too shy to
 fit in."
OOC Sitak says, "your natural qualities will make these skills all the more
 useful :)"
OOC Sitak says, "leaders don't have to fit in. :)"
OOC Sitak says, "followers do"
OOC Sitak says, "but you can't lead until you first learn how to follow"
<OOC> Sarah says, "True enough."
OOC Sitak says, "well follow with out loosing your sense of self"
OOC Sitak says, "on to IC...."
The female Admiral speaks with an even tone. Her diction is perfect and her
lips can be seen clearly as she enunciates. "Welcome to the Starfleet Command
Leadership Seminar." she says. "This will be a series of Workshops and
lectures geared toward orienting toward your duties as Command staff and
improving the skills that you will find that are already inherent to you."
Haru quitely writes, listening to the lecture being given..
Sarah takes out her padd and starts taking notes.
"This session will focus mainly on personnel management." she states, "This
will be an interactive workshop. I will ask you some question and we can go
over any current personnel problems you may already be addressing on your
 ships later into the workshop."
Haru raises his hand quietly. "Er...Sir? How long will this workshop keep us
from our ships? I may have to leave if my assistant in the Medical department
 can't handle a childbirth case.."
Sitak turns to Haru and says, "As we know words are mere constructs and what
gives them meaning is a shared meaning when passed between to individuals such
that one individual can understand the other." She turns to Sarah and
continues, "What happens in a break down of communication is when one
individual has a different meaning..." She pauses and turns to Haru and
responds, "logically you will be permitted to leave should an emergency occur."
Haru nods. 'Thank you, sir." He goes back to taking notes quietly...
Sitak raises her brow and continues, "Therefore to ensure that we have similar
views on the constructs used here I will check with you often to ascertain
what meaning you derive from specific words." She pauses a moment then
continues, "Ensign." she says looking at Haru, "What meaning is it that you
apply to the word 'Personnel'?" she asks.
Haru blinks, realizing he was asked the question. "Er...sir. I look at
personnel as the people I work beside and command in my time in the Sickbay as
well as when I'm on the bridge, sir." He blinks at Sitak for a moment.
Sitak doesn't respond but instead turns to Sarah and inquires, "And what
meaning do you affix to the word, Commander?"
Len has arrived.
Sarah nods, "The people assigned to work on a given asset. In general, the
people assigned to work alongside me.
Sitak nods to Sarah and turns to the new comer and says, "What definition do
 you assign the word Personnel?"

"Personell," Len says, repeating the word, looking up as the spotlight is
thrown onto her as she enters. "Personell are people; people who work for a
certain goal under a certain group. At the very base, though, they're people,
with peoples' needs, not just tools for whatever goal it is the personell are
 to accomplish."
Sitak nods and continues, "All very good views on what the word personnel
means, however..." she says with a somewhat drammatic type pause for a Vulcan.
"Your new roles dictate that you alter the definition you apply to this
 specific construct."
Haru blinks, continuing to take notes down...

Len nods as the Admiral's attention is removed from her directly, before making
her way to sit in an empty seat near the other Akira-ers.
"Before I explain we must turn our attention to the meaning of the word
Management. Would anyone like to volunteer the definition of this word?" Sitak
 asks.
Haru raises his hand, waiting to be noticed.
Sitak nods to Haru
Sarah's Compin chirps followed by a voice saying, "You in your house?"
Sarah taps her Compin and says, "No, Ensign, I'm in class."
Haru says, "Sir, managment is the main part of an operational force. It's best
described as the command staff of a ship in this case, sir, including
department heads." He looks to Sarah..And leans over to whisper.. "Maybe we
 should turn our compins off.""
Sarah's Compin chirps followed by a voice saying, "Er. Oh. What class?"
Haru taps his Compin and it deactivates with a chirp.
Sarah taps her Compin and says, "Leadership seminar. Zelar out."
Sarah taps her Compin and it deactivates with a chirp.

Turning her head towards PSI, Len follows Haru's lead and deactivates her
 commlink.
Len taps her Compin and it deactivates with a chirp.
Sitak nods, "That is one way to look at it Ensign."
Sitak says, "Any other views?"
Sarah nods, raising her hand.
Sitak nods at Sarah.
Sarah answers, "The art of managing, or of managing something. Managing meaning
 roughly administrating, in this case."
Sitak says, "Is anyone familiar with music?"
Sitak looks around the room at various hands rising and what have you.
Sitak says, "Management can be likened to Music."

Len raises a brow... and then raises her hand to accompany it.
Sitak says, "I win explain that analogy in depth in a moment."
Sitak says, "I want to go back to personnel for a moment. Personnel is like pieces
on a 3 dimensional chess set."
Sitak says, "the Manager... is the player.. and the personnel are the pieces. The
job is the goal. Each peice has it's own movements. It is up to the manager to
best decide how to move the peices to achieve the common goal."
Haru listens quietly, writing down notes.
Sarah nods, likewise writing down notes.
A student in the back of the class can be seen, his head bobing back and forth,
fighting off the affects of sleep, until finally he falls asleep on his desk.
Sitak says, "In order to reach that goal.. you must know both what it is.. and you
must know how your pieces can move. You must know their limitations and their
advantages.. the same is true with your crew."
Sitak says, "Is anyone confused by this analogy?"
Haru shakes his head.
Sarah shakes her head.

At length, Len, too, shakes her head.
"Now management of a Starfleet vessel is a bit more complex than a game of
chess. I am sure we can all agree on that." Sitak says then looks around the
room at each person finally resting her look on Hayes, the silent assassin in
 the room.
Sitak says, "It is now time to turn back to analogy I said I would safe for a
later. Does anyone remember what that was?"
Sarah nods, raising her hand.
Sitak nods to Sarah
Sarah answers simply, "The analogy was Music as management."
Haru continues to listen, writing things down.
"Yes.. yes.. Specifically consider a symphony." the Vulcan says. "I want you to
work together in small groups of three for a few moments and attempt to
explain through your groups discussion how Management of a Starfleet vessel
can be compared to a symphony."
Sitak says, "I will alot 5 minutes for this task. Please whisper as not to
 contaminate other groups ideas."
Sarah whispers to Haru and Len.
Haru whispers to Sarah and Len.
Sitak clasps her hand behind her and looks around the room at various people
 whispering to one another.
Len whispers to Haru and Sarah.
Haru whispers to Sarah and Len.
Sitak looks around to see if groups look just about ready yet.
Sitak looks around and says, "Please select a spokes person from each group,
 and present."
Haru erms, looking around Len and Sarah.
Some Caitian in the back raises his paw.
Sitak nods to the Caitian.
Sarah looks at Len & Haru, whispering, "One of you two want to go, or should I?"
Suddenly the sleeping student in the back jumps to his feet, "I represent my
 group!"
"Wait your turn!" the Caitian mews.
The student looks at the Caitian blankly, drool can be seen on his lower lip.
"Well we decided that a Starship cannot be liked to a symphony and that this is
a trick question, ma'am." the Caitian states proudly.
"I do not have time for trick questions Lieutenant." responds the Admiral.
Sarah nods to Len
Haru nods to Len as well.
Pointing at the loser nerd group in front of them, Sarah and company, the sleepy
ensign states, "I think they should go first."
The pointy earred Admiral looks at the group and says, "Who would like to share
 next?"
Sarah turns around, knowing what Ensign Redshirt is thinking, then turns back
 to Len, nodding.
Sitak looks at Sleepy-head and says, "How about you, Ensign."
The sleepy Ensign points to the nerd group again, "Aren't they going first?"
"No Ensign. As you are the most vocal at this time is it is more logical that
you speak now." Admiral Sitak responds.
"Simple," the genius Ensign begins. "It's quite simple, for a symphony to play
music, music that is liked anyway, the entire crew must be insync, on the same
page per say, if one person is misinformed of a note, the entire symphony
looks bad. A crew is exactly like this. From bottom up, everyone has a role,
including the Captain who is much like the composer. He or she is not directly
in charge of playing the instruments, yet he or she makes everything come to
 together."
Sitak says, "Nice ensign."
Sitak turns to Sarah, Len and Haru. "Would you like to share?"
Sarah nods to Len.
Haru nods to Len, again.
Sleepy Ensign nods to Len as well.
Sitak waits patiently.

Len takes a deep breath, and then turns to face the admiral, exhaling. "Well,
Admiral," she says, "A symphony easily parallels the operation of a starship.
Starting at the top, the starship's CO is like the director, who directs but
does not actually do things his or herself. The starship's XO is like the
assistant director, who helps the director by making sure things get done. The
section leaders of the band are like department heads, who further specify
control. The ship's SO is like a 'head section leader', who helps and
organizes the department heads or section leaders to make sure their players
 know what they are doing."
Sitak silently considers what Len just said then nods to her. "Close
Lieutenant." She looks around the room at everyone then says, "All very good
answers really however I will explain it thus...."
"The management of a Starfleet vessel can be likened to a symphony in the
following way." the vulcan begins, then states, "The Captain of the ship can
be compared to the composer of the music. The Captain of the ship dictates
what all parts of the crew will be doing."
Sitak says, "The Executive Officer of the ship can me likened to the Director. It
is his job to make sure that what the Captain has dictated or what the
composer has written is played out."
"The Second Officer is like the assistant to the director. It is his job to
make sure each section leader has the appropriate music on their stands. It is
his job to to make sure that department heads are well trained as well as
their staff beneath them." Sitak explains.
Sitak states, "The Departmental heads of course would be the various section
leaders for each instrument. The section leader makes sure that each person in
their section are on the same page and playing the same tune."
Genius Ensign goes back to his chair and lays his head down.
Sitak says, "Are there any questions?"
Haru shakes his head.
Sitak says, "I will give you a Scenario and let's see how this is worked out."
Sitak says, "Admiral Hayes gives you a mission..."
Sitak says, "There is a mechanical device hidden somewhere on Trill. This device
is causing gamma radiation to infect the nearby water supply. The villiage
closest to the Marba River is the most infected. Using your current crew
roster, determine each step of the mission. Your over all goal is of course to
rid Trill of this device. However, the objectives of the mission will be to 1)
Locate and destroy the device, 2) Clean Trills water supply, and 3) Heal any
affected individuals. You have 15 minutes to work up a complete plan of how to
 use your personnel."
Sitak says, "Same groups as before."
Haru looks between Sarah and Len.
Sitak says, "If this situation is too difficult then at anytime suggest we work it
 out as a whole class."
Haru whispers to Len.
Genius Ensign stands up once again, looking as if he is about to make a
statement of pure genius, "I'd keep a crew of five on the vessel for bridge
operations along with the ship's full compliment of scientists., they of
course will be in charge of finding this vessel, while the scientists will be
looking for said cleaning solutions. My medical staff will be beamed down to
investigate the situation and procure a cure, or at the very atleast gather
information. Security team will be beamed down to search for said device and
augmented with the help of the skeleton bridge crew. Assuming everything goes
to plan, the device should be found, and transported aboard at which point it
will be studied by the scientists who in turn will relay their findings to the
medical team in order to further their efforts in finding a cure."
Sitak says, "I will address your plan in a moment, Ensign. But first I would like
to give some of the others an opportunity to answer the question.""
Sitak looks around the room to assess the general readiness of the other
 students.
Len whispers to Haru.
Haru nods repeatedly to the XO in the group he's at.
Len whispers to Haru.
Haru whispers to Len.
Haru stands up.
Sitak turns to Haru and says, "Are you ready to present?"
Haru nods. "Aye, sir."
Sitak says, "Go ahead."
Clearing his throat, Haru begins to speak. "Commander Len and I believe we
would split our personell into four teams, one for each of the three on-planet
tasks, and one onboard the ship to process the data. Alpha would handle the
disabling of the device. It would consist of security, engineering, and two
operations/science officers. An upwards of a 6-person team. Security is there
just in case the device was placed intentionally. All the ground teams would
have EVA suits, of course. Beta would be a group of science officers and
engineers working to clean the environment, Delta would be a squad of medics
to heal the infected. Each team would be led by a department head or suitable
volunteer. The fifth and final team would be on the ship, made up of
scientists and engineers and operations personell who would analyze what data
the groups find using our labs and ships' computer to augment their speed and
calculations. Since the device would probably be hard to find, the team would
probably have to consist of many more than 6. Perhaps around forty people, but
I don't think we want to put that many at risk. I also think we should add one
or more medic to alpha just in case the crew of that team is infected." He
gives Genius Boy a look over from their corner, in a "top that" manner...
Haru sits back down.
Haru looks to Len. "I left nothing out, I believe, sir?"

Len shakes her head, a smirk forming at the corner of her lip.
Sitak nods slowly then clasps her hand behind her back and paces the stage for
a moment before beginning. "All very nice plans" she states. "However, I was
looking for step by state details." I would like to know how the orchestra
will play the symphony. Therefore we will work on this as a group." She asks,
"What is the first thing upon getting this information that the captain should
 do?" she asks.
Haru coughs, and raises his hand.
"Yes, Ensign" the vulcan says to Haru.
Haru says, "Hold a senior staff meeting?"
Wesley stands up and looks at the Vulcan oddly. "I am not wrong," he states,
 then sits down back.
Sitak says, "What would be discussed at this senior staff meeting?"
Haru says, "The problem would be discussed among the command staff and
department heads, in which a solution would be worked out."
Wesley looks at Haru, arrogantly, geniusly, "Come now, a staff meeting will
take hours. More people will die."

When Haru is finished speaking, Len says, "Admiral, would not planning things
out ahead of time limit the flexibility and adaptability of the operation?"
"Despiting that fact, Ensign. Before people can get better, a few people more
people may die. But if you're able to save the entire city instead of a few
people, then it's doable." Haru'd know something about that.
Sitak looks over at the rowdy person and says, "I expect that at this state in
your career ensign that you know proper classroom behavior."
Haru coughs. "Sorry, sir. For my outburst.."
"I fail to see the error in my statement. It is perfectly and completely well
thought out and would work," Wesley states, looking at the oddball Admiral. If
 only he had a spitball.
Sitak says, "Negative... meeting to have an informed crew will cut down on time.
Suppose there is a crewman in science that is already familiar with the
problem and has been working on a solution?"
Sitak says, "Suppose an engineer has encountered a situation like this before?"
"Then you failed to address the fact that this a known problem!" Wesley states,
elated. "See, I knew I was right from the start."
Haru begins to become annoyed. Len may not get to see a pissed off Vulcan, but
she'll get to see a pissed off Japanese man.
Sitak says, "Intially what should happen is that the Captain calls a meeting with
the Senior crew or sends out a directive to the senior crew. The Senior crew
should then meet with their staff and report back to the Command staff in the
official strategic meeting. These meetings should not be a plat form of speech
making. These meetings should be brief and to the point."
Sitak says, "The briefing exists simply for the Captain to inform the crew of the
 mission."
Sitak says, "it should discuss the overall goal and the objectives."
Sitak says, "And that's it"
Sitak says, "that takes about 15 minutes at most"
Sitak says, "each Senior staff should then inform their crew and gather or
inventory materials needed for this crisis."
Sitak says, "What if each of your plans were put into play and there were no
 isolinear inducers on the ship?"
Sitak says, "We would need to know that ahead of time."
"Says who," Wesley responds. "All five hundrd people talking, saying their bits
and pieces could take... hours," he adds in.
Sitak says, "No one should be talking at a briefing but the Captain."

"Did you not just say that the point of the briefing was to find out if perhaps
people were already working on a solution?" Len asks tenatively, raising her
 brow.
"Gotta ask questions if you want to find out answers, I don't follow your
logic. A meeting would and should longer than 15 minutes," Wesley responds,
 convinced that he is right.
Sitak says, "this is not a meeting"
Sitak says, "this is a briefing"
Sitak says, "a briefing is not a meeting"
Sitak says, "it is not a discussion"
Sitak says, "it is a briefing"

"How, then, admiral, is the information, should a person already have been
working on a cure, come to light?" Len asks, brow still raised.
Sitak says, "When the Senior staff meet with their staff to gather materials check
inventory and discuss the dilhemma, this will come to light"
Sitak says, "information has to flow down."
Sitak says, "that means from the captain on down the crew"
Sitak says, "it gets to the line staff via department heads."
Sitak says, "Science will need to meet to discuss the Gamma radiation for
instance.. it will have to inventory biosuits for the crew to wear while
 addressing the problem."

"But only the captain is allowed to speak at the briefing?" Len asks. "So,
there would be a fifteen minute briefing, at minimum, and then there would be
a meeting in which people present what information they already have, and then
another conference in which the captain assigns tasks or basically says what
 needs to be done?"
Sitak says, "Biosuits were not mentioned in the outlines above."
Sitak says, "Remember Lieutenant.. the only person at the briefing are the Captain
 and the senior crews."
Sitak says, "What about the rest of the staff?"
Sitak says, "No they are not allowed there or a discussion like this would break
 out."
Sitak says, "A briefing is to brief the staff on the mission"
Sitak says, "brief.. is a summary.. a description"

"So, in overall, the entire planning stage would take much longer than the
fifteen minutes for the briefing," Len says.
Sitak says, "each crew must then meet with their staff to make sure the necessary
materials are available.. and to gather departmental ideas."
Sitak says, "Yes.. if we can get past what a briefing is I can move on to the
 planning."
Sitak says, "I keep getting planning questions."
Sitak says, "and I'm not there yet"
Sitak says, "Once these departmental 'briefings' are done.. the Senior staff meets
again with Captain to discuss what their departments can do and a plan is
hashed out in the quickest manner possible. A decision MUST be made most
times. Indecision is a decision and often a bad one."
Sitak says, "The mission is broken down to it's objectives which are then broken
down into smaller tasks and divided amongst appropriate staff."
Sitak says, "Does appropriate staff always mean from a specific department?"

"Of course not," Len says, nodding to Haru. "A crew is made up of individuals."
Sitak says, "Precisely. While it may seem to be a task to assign medical to heal
the individuals.. you may find that quite a number of your science staff have
 medical experience."
Sitak says, "another meeting will take place in which the senior staff will not
take suggestions.. they'll just give out directives.. and the mission will
 proceed."
Sitak says, "after the Mission is completed."
Sitak says, "The Senior staff will meet to be debriefed and will then debrief
 their respective crews."
Sitak says, "In the debriefing, all should explore how they feel the mission
when.. and what could have been done better as well as what was done well."
Sitak says, "Outside of Missions.. Senior crew should meet regularly to assess the
status of their departments and any commendations that should be given out to
 their crews."
Sitak says, "This concludes the information I came to share today in this session.
Now we will have a brief question and answer period where I can offer trouble
 shooting for any present problems."

"What can you suggest as ways to increase the overall morale of a ship, other
than the now-standard holodecks and rec areas?" Len asks.
Sitak says, "how much time is spent with crew members outside of the bridge?"
Sitak says, "I find often times many crew members stand on the bridge and stare at
each other for hours even then ship is docked. A most illogical action or
 inaction more appropriately."

"I'm not saying that the rec areas aren't used, but I'm thinking things like,
oh, to use your musical example - an artistic troupe formation, perhaps, or
maybe organized sports in the holodeck," Len says. "I've also noticed that
myself, admiral. Some people don't seem to know when they are off-duty."
Sitak says, "I find the most motivating thing for me to be knowledge. Perhaps you
can set up a workshop to educate your Senior staff on this material so that
they can understand their own roles and then have them explain the roles of
their staff to them. Often once on a ship.. recent graduates are just thrown
 in with no direction."

Grinning, Len says, "Our ship does see its fair shair of recent graduates.
 Thank you, Admiral."
Sitak says, "I believe Ensign Asuhara sent a dilhemma to me. He had some concern
 regarding a pregnant crew member."
Haru blinks. And nods.
Haru says, "Yes sir."
Haru says, "I wasn't aware of policy of having children aboard such a classed
 vessel as an Akira-class, sir."
Sitak says, "Starfleet is foremost an exploratory organization"
Sitak says, "It's foundation can be linked back to 20th Century Earth and NASA"
Sitak says, "Because it is not a typical military environment families are alotted
for provided there is suficient space aboard one's vessel."
Sitak says, "I urge each of you to familiarize yourself with the General Orders
and the Code of Justice that Starfleet is run by."
Sitak says, "They can be found here at the library."

"Thank you again, Admiral. Permission to be dismissed? I'd like to get back to
the ship to start implementing some of these ideas," Len says.
Sitak says, "Yes.. if there are no further questions.. everyone is dismissed."

Len nods, walking out of the exit, glancing towards Crusher, and nodding once
with a slight grin on her way out.
All exit the lecture hall.
