You can't usually tell if someone is schizophrenic by just looking at them.
Are any of these boys schizophrenic?
Ok, maybe you can.
Schizophrenia is a serious brain disease in which the person usually cannot sustain a healthy way of life without proper medication and supervision. They suffer from hallucinations, delusions, and overall detachment from reality.

People who exhibit symptoms of schizophrenia may have distorted perceptions of reality, may hear voices, and fear that everyone is out to get them.
Causation and Treatment
Schizophrenia has not been confirmed to be caused by any certain thing. Genes and inheritance have been the main objects of discussion among the scientific roundtable. On the human genome project, chromosomes 13 and 6 were linked to schizophrenia, but nothing has been confirmed.

An imbalance of dopamine and glutamate have been found in brain scans of schizophrenic individuals.
Schizophrenia is not a split personality disorder!
Schizophrenia has the common misconception of being linked with multiple personality disorder. This is clearly not the case. The two conditions are treated differently. For schizophrenia there are two main groups of treatment:
Antipsychotic Drugs
These are drugs that sedate and reduce the debilitating symptoms of schizophrenia. Even though the psychotic episodes will still occur, they will be less frequent and less severe.
Psychosocial Treatment
This treatment includes the patient learning social skills and on-the-job training to be employed. Usually they are dependent upon a close relative or care giver throughout their life. But...psychosocial treatment helps them learn how to communicate better with society.
