Apeldoorn (about 1 hour away from Hengelo) runs a historic steam train tour in the summer. It travels into the Veluwe, a forest/wildlife preserve.

Kees wants to rent this for a future birthday bash... But I don't think he's happy that he has to hire the driver as well.

On 9 July 2001, Kees' company sponsored a motorcycle tour. The week prior to the trip had been HOT and we were looking forward to a gorgeous cross-country trip.

This photo was taken during one of the few dry moments that day...

Kees was enjoying himself anyway.

Gas prices (in guilders). At that time, US$1 = ~ƒ2.54; and 1 gallon is 3.785 liters, so 1 gallon cost approximately US$3.79

Yes, the price for Diesel and AutoGas (or LPG) are a lot lower, but there are higher taxes placed on those autos-- you have to drive a LOT to make it worth your while.

Leiden, the destination of our tour.

Leiden is a student city, so there are lots of bicycles. However, this is a common site near train stations throughout The Netherlands. Amsterdam Centraal has a multi-story bike parking garage that is usually full.

This is the underside of a drawbridge in Haarlem. Nope, I didn't use Photoshop to distort this photo-- the bridgedeck is somewhat diamond-shaped.
