Hengelo Sights 2

There are lots of small roads and bike paths throughout the countryside.  This was taken during a ride on Mother's Day.

This is in the square in front of the train station (not seen, to the right of the picture) with Tycho, Kees and myself.  The odd-shaped white stones on the ground behind us are the housings for the jets to the water fountain.

The building under construction in the background is the new civic theater.  It was completed in April 2001 and is much nicer to look at now.

This is a small portion of the twice-weekly market.  One can find meat, seafood, fabric, clothing, and fresh (more or less) produce from many countries.  I discovered that I really like Turkish plums.

The lights above are the structure seen in another photo of the market square during the Hengelo fashion show.

The lights at a different angle.  The lights change color and make random patterns.  Most people can't deny that they think it's pretty neat, but many think it's too large (about 55 meters long by 15-20 meters tall) and no one really likes the location-- especially the people who live directly across the square from it.

In March-April 2001, Hengelo began its sewer upgrade/street replacement project.  This is the first step:  dig deep trenches throughout the city center and create a lot of bicycle/pedestrian/car traffic headaches.

The next photo shows more of the work going on.

I was able to find an area where all of the last 3 steps are in progress.  At the left, you have the filled (finally!) trench. In the middle is the thick, compacted level layer of fine sand. To the right are the new bricks.

It is forbidden for most vehicles to drive in the city center, so this street will remain fairly level for a long time.  Streets surrounding the city center are constructed with asphalt or concrete.
