Nacht van Hengelo, 8 June 2001

Once a year the town holds its "Hengelo Night"-- actually many towns have events like this.  Several of the streets that were still intact were turned into a racing course.  There were about 7 stages set up for live music and the market square was full of merchants selling ethnic clothing, jewelry, and cd's.

The first racing events were the step bike races.  Men and women competed against each other.

Well, I guess step racing is not the most exciting thing to watch.

Hmmm, those racers are in great shape-- maybe I should play more on my Razor...

The first bike race didn't begin until 8:30pm.

It was cool to be right at the edge of the course.

I'm always amazed at how close the racers get to each other.

Since there are always some people who don't like to watch bike racing, other spectator entertainment was provided.

I know I'd be too scared to jump because of the height, but I'd also be too shy with all the people watching me.
