I am very lucky to have lived in the county of my ancestors for 15 years. I lived eight miles from the village of my people. For respect and protection of my ancestors, I will not release any information as to the location of the village, however,I will share what we have found so far.
The village is located near a creek and is about 1 mile deep and 2 miles wide. It covers 4 natural springs and woodlands. At one of the springs is a "Kneeling Stone" (for Praying). Arrowheads can be found all over the land. Some pottery has been found. There is a place of Honor of the dead. It is now privately owned and is protected from harm. On the site are the remains of stones shaped in a square for the base of a house (The Cherokees lived in houses, not Teepees). The doorway facing east. This is the home of my Great grandfather, who owned and operated a grist mill, part of it still stands today. It was said that people came from all over the state to have him grind their corn. It was said that he did the finest grinding in the area. He was married to a Dutch/Porch Creek woman, they had 7 children. One was my Grandmother. Before the "Removal" there was over 100 people in this village. After...well....some went into hiding to keep from being removed. They hid the fact of being of "Indian" blood. The people were forced to take up the ways of the "White-Man" to be able to stay on their land.
Some were buried in the local Church grounds. They quit speaking their Language so as not to be found out. They changed their ways of living, praying, and clothing.
