| "They're so alike it's almost impossible to believe. And it makes people want to bash their heads against a wall." ~~~ Some guy remarking on the similarities between Nutik and Nunvael |

| At birth they had been hard to tell apart. The one who was always looking around with bright, royal blue eyes was named Nutik, New-tick. The other one was always examining the crib, almost as if trying to find a way out. He was named Nunvael, Noon-vale. As they grew, Nutik and Nunvael became indistinguishable from one another. Not even their parents could tell them apart. So they had always worn nametags, although that led to other mischief, it helped slightly to clear their names up. There wasnt really a purpose to figuring out who was who. They had the same writing, the same way of sitting, the same accent and way of pronouncing things. They got the same grades on everything even when they were on opposite sides of the room and didnt talk with each other. When they colored they used the same colors. All this made them impossible to tell apart. So, as they went from fourth grade into fifth, the teachers gave up trying to distinguish between them and just gave the papers back to whatever one they thought had done it. That year they got rid of their nametags as well. They continued to wear the same clothes at the same time, though. The doctors couldnt figure out who was who either, so there was just one file under the heading Nutik and Nunvael in the office. What happened to one generally happened to the other. Both were the same exact height, even down to centimeters, both weighed the same, and both had the same general statement of health, perfect physical condition. It was in the first year of high school that they met the first person who wasnt annoyed at them for being completely identical. She was older than them by two days, but she was small, only four feet five inches tall, while they were six feet three and a half inches tall. While they lived in the suburbs, she lived out in the country. They had something in common, though, several things, really. She was a writer while they were musicians of a sort, both making things up at random. All three of them had aliases online and all three role-played those aliases. A friendship was struck on the first day. Soon after they started sharing their skills and knowledge, both sides teaching the other. They were escape artists, able to get out of anything, while she was an expert at fighting skills. They taught her to scale walls and pick locks while she taught them a way to fight with, and without, weapons. ______________________________________________________________________________________________ He rose as the sun struck his face. Grumbling to himself, he stands up and rolls his identical brother out of the other bed in the room, smiling slightly at the thump his brother makes. Hey, quit that, Noon. I was awake! He grins, Nutik always woke up on time, but it had become a game between them to see who could rise the fastest just to roll the other out of bed. Nutik grabs Nunvaels leg and yanks him to the floor, twisting out of the way just so that he didnt get landed on. Nunvael lands with a hard thump beside his brother then scrambles back up to his feet. He walks away quickly before Nutik can grab his leg again then pulls open the drawer that has clothes for both of them. So, what do you want to wear today, Nutik? Oh, I dunno. Pick whatever you want. Nutik remarks from the floor where hes laying. Nunvael grabs up two dark blue shirts and some faded jeans then throws them onto Nutiks head, keeping his own pair in his hands. Then, pulling open another drawer, he grabs up two grayish jackets with dragons on the back and throws one on Nutiks head again. Will you stop that? Nutik laughingly says as he pulls on his clothes. Nunvael grins, You do it to me all the time. He pulls on his own clothes then walks down the steps of the two-story house. It wasnt that big, really, since it was a house in the suburbs, but it was big enough for just him, his brother, and their mother. Their father had died when they were just two years old, a car accident supposedly. Nunvael pulls a chair out from the table and sits down in a sort of casual position. He watches as Nutik pulls another chair out and sits down as well, sitting in the same position without a thought. That was one of the things that drove everyone, well, nearly everyone, insane. Tamia didnt seem to mind that they were identical in all respects, but she was the only one who didnt. Their mom smiles as she brings them each a plate of pancakes and scrambled eggs. They got their black hair, amber colored skin, and tall height from her. Apparently they had gotten their royal blue eyes from their father. Nunvael smiles back at her then focuses on his plate and starts wolfing down his breakfast. Their mom had to leave shortly after sunrise, so they always tried to get up on time just to see her off and eat her homemade breakfast. Both finish at the same time then rise and hug their mom. Nunvael walks over to the counter and grabs up both backpacks and throws Nutiks at him. Without looking to see if he had caught it, Nunvael walks to the door then opens it and steps aside, letting his mom pass out the door first. He steps out behind her then walks over to the driveway, letting Nutik close the door. Nunvael looks down as he feels a soft nudge then smiles, his cat Cairin, a twin to Nutiks Kairen. That nearly drove everyone up the wall, Cairin and Kairen were just as identical as Nutik and he were, and for other people, it was impossible to tell who was who. ______________________________________________________________________________________________ School was boring that day, just like usual. Especially since Tamia was so out of it because of the ewes lambing so she slept through almost every class. No one yelled at her, though. They had all seen what she had to help with, her mothers flock of sheep was huge and Tamia had to wake up at all hours of the night to make sure that everything was well with the sheep. They got through their tests easily, and the rest of the day was a piece of cake, really. They had to help Tamia through the day, though, but that wasnt too hard, they had the same classes as her, and she was so small and light that they could easily carry her. ______________________________________________________________________________________________ They were conversing in the empty back room when the window suddenly flipped open and Tamia dived in. Nunvael watches as she rolls, turns, and draws her dagger threateningly. A good tactic to use, especially when entering a house unannounced. He smiles slightly, he had taught her how to do that, and she was better at entering a house unannounced than most people were. She also seemed to be more awake than usual. So nice of you to drop in, Tamia, he remarks. He watches her grin as she quickly figures out who was who. She was sharper than most, as well, not many people would put together the few differences about them together and be able to come up with the right answer. Hows it going, you two? Tamia asks as she sheathes her dagger and rises, her mean cat jumping in the window at the same time. Just fine, little sis, Nunvael answers, grinning. The two of them always referred to her as a little sister even though she was two days older and she seemed to accept it. He looks down as Cairin and Kairen saunter into the room and go to their humans then reaches down and scratches Cairins head. Suddenly he feels the room shiver and he looks around, puzzlement on his face. He feels it start to shiver again and then Nunvael lays on the ground for a second, trying to sort his thoughts out. Then, muttering under his breath, he pushes himself to his feet and looks around. He quickly glances over at his brother, nodding slightly when he sees Nutik doing the same to him. Looking around, he tries to figure out where they are, which isnt easy, since he sees more trees around them than there should be. Where is this? he asks. I dont know, Tamia answers after a slight pause. Nunvael sees Nutik pick up Kairen and start petting him, still looking around. We should go over there, it looks like theres a city there, Nutik remarks as he points at a speck in the distance with his right hand. Nunvael looks over at Tamia then, seeing her shrug, sets out towards the speck, leaving Nutik and Tamia to follow him. It took just about as long as he had estimated, since they had to walk around and through groups of trees. When they actually came out into a clear spot he could see the buildings. Tamia looks up and then draws the rest of them to look up when she whispers, Dragons. Nunvael watches them then remarks, Now Im really wondering what this place is. Nutik turns and bolts towards the city, saying, Well come on. We wont find out by standing here. Nunvael grins then bolts after Nutik, Cairin at his side as he catches up with Nutik and matches stride. He stops in front of a man and Nutik stops at the same time, an amused grin on his face that mirrors the one on Nunvaels. Who are you two? the man asks. Im Nunvael and he is Nutik, Nunvael remarks with a smile, Where is this place? This, the man answers, is Cy Dragonstake. Theres a clutch of eggs on the sands if you wish to stand. Nunvael nods, That sounds great, we will. He turns as Tamia catches up with them, And this is Leiris, she says, cutting him off. Nice to meet you, the man remarks. Nunvael turns to her, saying, This is Cy Dragonstake, Leir. They have a clutch of eggs on the sands as well. Nutik and I have already agreed to stand, do you want to as well? She thinks for a bit then shakes her head, "I want to spend a bit of time thinking some things over before I try." He shrugs slight, just like with her using her internet name instead of her real one, you could never tell with Tamia. |
