Notes for CLAUDE LORRAINE REZNOR:

Claude was the oldest of six children of George and Alice Amanda (McKinney) Reznor. He was born August 20, 1866. He was educated in Mercer and there learned the jeweler's trade. He moved to Sharon in 1899, after having lived in Oil City, and other towns in Pennsylvania. He owned and operated jewelry and drug stores throughout the county and Hubbard, Ohio. His daughter Dorothy claimed he had the first cut rate drug store in the nation. He owned two drug stores in downtown Sharon. In the early 1900s, when the Shenango River overflowed its banks and flooded the downtown area the stores were wiped out. Claude sold out and went to work for the Reznor Manufacturing Company, maker of gas-fired heaters, a business started by his father in 1888. He was factory representative in Chicago, but was back in Mercer with his family by the year 1914. In April 1918 his son Fred was inducted into the U.S. Army. Claude was seriously ill at the time, and when Fred left for France June 15 father and son knew they would never see each other again. Claude died two months later, without ever learning whether his son Fred returned safely from the war. His obituary appeared in The Sharon Herald, August 6, 1918, three months before the Armistice.

Claude was known for his entrepreneurial spirit. About one of his ventures, The Sharon Herald reported September 23, 1914, under a headline reading "Claude Reznor buys the 'Hairless Horse'", the following account:

"The "hairless horse," one of the feature attractions at the Forest City Fair, North Randall, is be to exhibited at the Portage County Fair at Ravenna (Ohio), which opens today. The animal was purchased yesterday by Claud Reznor, Sharon, Pa., from "Sam" Strong, "Al" Bailey and Charles Clark, Hermit Club members, and will remain at Ravenna until the fair closes Thursday evening. Strong purchased the horse, the only one of the kind in the world, from Thomas Cathan, a farmer living near Gates Mills. More than 8,000 persons saw the animal at the fair last week. Reznor paid $1,000 for the animal."

Claude's daughter Dorothy Reznor was fond of recalling this story and telling how he displayed the horse, for profit, every time an opportunity arose. She couldn't remember how or when her father finally parted with it.

A drug store on East State Street in downtown Sharon, founded by him, but bought by the Ellovitch family of Sharon, bore the name Reznor Drug Store until the 1980's when it went out of business.

Eliza Luella Hindman was born February 22, 1869, in Butler County. She was one of thirteen children. Her father, John Foster Hindman, was an oil operator and hotel owner in Pennsylvania, West Virginia and Ohio. Her mother, Emeline Wolpart Hindman, was descended from a pioneer family, one of whose sons, George Wolpart, was a Revolutionary War patriot, a private in Captain Joseph Gear's Company, 9th Battalion, Lancaster County. Eliza Luella died March 22, 1964, in Sharon, age ninety-five, having outlived two of her three children. The house where she lived the last thirty-four years of her life, at 94 Flowers Avenue, was purchased by her when it was new. It has been in the family four generations and is now owned and occupied by her great grandson Christopher Smith and his wife Germaine.

The Sharon Herald, February 23, 1912

Reznors A Lucky Guy;

Nothing At All To Do

"Gee, but youre a lucky guy," said an acquaintance to Claude Reznor, druggist, baker, hardware merchant, automobile agent, sales manager, jeweler, and candy manufacturer, when he drifted into one of the Reznor chain stores today.

All Claude has to do is open his drug store in the morning, fill any prescriptions that came in, arrange his jewelry cases, repair watches and engrave initials on spoons and other silverware, cross the street to his hardware store, where he opens a few kegs of nails and waits on customers. Going into the next room he proceeds to bake a few cakes and pies and manufactures a batch of candy. In the meantime he drums up customers for automobiles and the Reznor gas stove, and when he has a few minutes to spare he goes to South Sharon (early name for Farrell) where he looks after his cut rate drug store. When night comes he goes home happy in the thought that he will have nothing to do until tomorrow.
