history of my interest in philosophy:

It all started when I took Introduction to Philosophy at my local community college..... I don't know why I took the class. I guess I was curious. My brother had taken the course a few years earlier, and he really liked the class. I thought it would be interesting to learn some philosophy, since I didn't know what it was about. What I realized in taking this course was that a whole new world of thought had opened up before me. What I didn't realize was the mess I was getting myself into!

more to come later (I think)

quotable quotes:

  • "The difference is that now I am perfectly comfortable with these arguments, and then they seemed like a wretched subterfuge to me. It's not that I perceived some flaw in them that I was unable to deal with. I perceived no flaw in them. They simply seemed like a wretched subterfuge to me, and that is all that there is to say about the matter." - Peter van Inwagen, "Quam Dilecta", God and the Philosophers, p.38
  • "For as what is conceived, is conceived by conception, and what is conceived by conception, as it is conceived, so is in conception; so what is understood, is understood by understanding, and what is understood by understanding, as it is understood, so is in the understanding. What can be more clear than this?" - St. Anselm
  • On how we cannot explain God with the standards of the human mind: "You can tell your philosophy professor to put that in his pipe and smoke it!" - David Crump, Religion/Theology Department at Calvin College
  • "Don't ever trust a philosopher's pronouncements on empirical fact! ALL LIES!" - David Van Baak, Physics Department at Calvin College

Calvin College 1999-2000 Philosophy Symposium, presentation outlines

Once upon a time I was one of the coordinators for the philosophy symposium at Calvin. I had a website, and put up the outlines of some of the presenters. Even though I graduated, for some reason I still kept them up. Philosophy supposedly never gets too old for discussion, so here they are.... those old symposium outlines to read over and check out just in case you're interested...

Still in the process of updating my website. Don't know how long it will take or if it'll ever be done. In any case, have a great day!
