In The Beginning

Samoyeds became part of the O'Brien family when one of our friends came around to our house holding a bundle of white fluff. From then on we were hooked and we absolutely had to have one. And so came Snowraker Bianca our much loved Anoushka. We answered an advertisement in the paper and went to have a look - the puppies all ran away from us, they were shy and not very well socialised, but anyway, we had to have one and so Anoushka came home. Anoushka was shown in the early days, but despite her lovely type her temperament let her down and eventually we got the picture, a champion she was not to be! And so, we thought, we should breed her. Anoushka was sent to a friend's dog and a bouncy litter of seven were born in 1992.

Kalnovitch Katinka - Konnnie - a gorgeous nicely sized white and biscuit bitch - was the show result of this litter and she was nearly titled despite not being what was developing into our 'ideal' Samoyed. It was really due to Konnie, however, that Michelle learned the art of dog exhibition and from showing Konnie, Michelle became hooked!

A hard study of the Samoyed standard, reading any book we could get our hands on and watching as many Samoyeds in the ring as we could, resulted in the purchase of CH Murmansk Tomsk - Mikki from Carol and Iain Fleming of Murmansk Samoyeds. Mikki was our dream boy, a gorgeous type with a head we adored. Mikki was eventually titled, despite his many inappropriate mischevious antics in the ring!

Mikki was mated to Anoushka, and our first Kalnovitch superstar was born - CH Kalnovitch Nova Katya.

Sasha was simply divine and a fantastic showdog. She titled easily against some of the best in New Zealand and picked up many group and in show awards along the way. Despite many attempts we were unable to get a litter from Sasha and so she was eventually retired, living out the rest of her life with her family of angels - the Penno family. Unfortunately Sasha was put to rest in the New Year due to a suspected brain tumour.
