Kallarackal Family is one of the oldest and traditional Syrian Christian Families, in old Travancore area. Take a moment to read about the origin, place of origin, development and growth of Kallarackal Family and about its off shoot banches and sub-branches in Kerala, other states in India and also different countries in the world.

Traditionaly it is believed that our forfather and his family were converted to christianity from an ancient Nambuthiri family (nambuthiri illom) named Kallarackal in Pallippuram Desom, by St. Thomas the Apostle of Jesus Christ during the period A.D 52. At that time Pallippuram Desom was included in the extented Kokkamangalam village area.

For over the time span of about 1962 years, so many branches and sub-branches have off shoot from the christian Kallarackal Family. Many branches have migrated to different places in Kerala, to other states and also to different countries in the world in general.

Many branches or sub-branches have adopted the root family name to their family name along with the place which they have migrated or the name of the land they have settled. Eg:- Kallarackal Kadavil, Pallipram Kallarackal, Kallarackal Elanjiparambil and Kallarackal Puduparambil etc.Yet some others have adopted a different name which have no connection with the root family name, such as the land name or the important things near their place. Eg:- Munduparambil, Koottunkal etc. Most of the branches in far away places even do not know that their root family is Kallarackal, Pallippuram.

There was a lot of kathanars in different branches of this family right from AD 55. Until AD 1653 all christian Kallarackal Family members belong to the same church, called the Mar Thoma Christians. Catholicism of these families is in AD1599 after Synod of Diamper. Those migrated to Kandanad, Mulamthuruthy, Kaduthuruthy etc, after the Coonan Cross Oath (pledge of the Coonen cross) in AD 1653 happened at Mattancherry, on resistance against the Portuguese interference in Church affairs became Jacobites. Now there are a lot of priests and nuns both in Jacobite and Catholic churches from different branches of this root family.

Below given is an extract from the website http://www.parumalathirumeni.org/

The "PALLATHATTU" family, to which Mor Gregorios (Parumala Thirumeni) belongs to, is a direct branch of this "Thanagattu" family. The "Vettikkal Kurisu Palli" (Chapel) which later become the first dayro of the Malankara Jacobite Syrian Church, was constructed by Iypora Tharakan-I of this Pallathattu family. Kassisso Geevarghese Malpan Pallathattu was the nephew of this Iypora. Earlier this branch of the family (Pallathattu) had migrated to Kandanad, near Mulunthuruthy and stayed at "Pallipram Kallarakal" house. Pallathattu Kassisso Geevarghese Malpan's brother 'Kochu Mathai' later shifted to "Chathuruthy House" at Mulunthuruthy, few years after his marriage with 'Maria'.

It is another extract, from the book 'Parumala Kochuthirumeni' written in Malayalam by Fr. E.J. Abraham and is published by Malankara Orthadox Herald (English translation of Malayalam paragraph) :-

"Parumala Kochuthirumeni or Bishop Mar Gregorios was born in a reputed family ‘Chathuruthy’ in Mulamthuruthy at Kochi state on 3rd Midhunan 1023 ME (June 15th, AD1848). His father's family is 'Pallathatta' in Mulamthuruthy. Inference is that this is derived from the word 'Pallithatt'. It is saying that a King of Kochi state has built and given this house as a gift for some reason and hence this house got the name 'Pallithatt', later the name is derived to 'Pallithatta'. His father married the one and the only daughter named Mariyam, of 'Kallarackal Pallippurath' family which is nearby, and he lived in her house by way of adoption. This family, in the olden days, has migrated to here from the South Pallippuram desom and hence still the family members are known as 'Kallarackal from Palliprath'. After the death of Mariyam's parents he has gone back to his family 'Chathuruthy'. The tradition is that, the family (Kallarackal, Pallippuram) is one of the traditionally old Brahmin families converted to Christianity in Malankara."

All branches that have developed to Kallarackal Family from AD 52 to AD 1674 are not completely traceable. An ancestor Vareeth born in the year A.D 1674, as one of the 6 sons of a Chacko in the Kallarackal Family, has established the Kallarackal Kadavil Family around A.D 1700. During the same period or a little later, Vareeth's another brother (name not identified) has established Pallippram Kallarackal Family at Mulamthuruthy. About this family is mentioned in the earlier said book 'Parumala Kochuthirumeni' . Details of the other 4 sons of Chacko can not be traced out.

At a time which is not identified, one ancestor Thommen in the Kallarackal family whose two sons Varkey and Thommen have settled at Kumarakom  and established two branches of Kallarackal family there. They are Kallarackal Elanjiparambil Family and Kallarackal Puduparambil Family. three or four centuries ago one ancenster from "Kallarackal Kadavu" family of Pallippuram founded "Koottunkal" family

Vareeth's another son Varkey (the second generation in the Kallarackal Kadavil Family) estabileshed Vathappally Family. Another Varkey (born in AD 1820) who is the 5th generation in the Kallarackal Kadavil Family, establised Munduparambil Family. It is saying that around A.D. 1714 (see chapter 12 for some more details) one ancestor from the Kallarackal Kadavil Family established Koottunkal Family. Many branches have developed from the Koottunkal Family. Vazhathara Family (see family tree) is one of its branches which has branched out during or around A.D.1800 by one Thomman. Puchathali, Kochuparambil, Vadayakkoot, Parathara, Uvannath, Thaikkoottathil, Kalathimekkara, Vazhathara thekku, Kalappurakkal, Vazhathara Vadakku, etc are the sub-branches of the Vazhathara Family.

Kallarackal Kadavil Family members could collect the full details of the last 340 years, i.e. the 1st generation ( AD 1674) to the 11th generation (AD 2014) and a few details about their pre-history. It is not a simple thing and it shows how much efferts have taken to gather these details. These information is an asset, not only to Kallarackal Kadavil Family but also to all offshoot branches and sub-branches of the Kallarackal Family. It will help all these branches to make a study of their family history using this information as a reference. By co-relating, correcting and compiling the information we could gather, with a combined effort, a full fledged history of our family, the sub-branches and the root family as a whole. Hence I request all the branches and sub-branches to take this as a challenge and start digging the history back to their forefathers and try to get a common link to the root family.

Marthoma Sleebha kept in the Forane Church at Pallippuram

It is traditionally believing that this cross is made by St. Thomas who is an expert carpenter and he mounted it at Kokkamangalam Church while it was established. But Nambuthiri fanatics throw it away to the near by vembanadu lake. By low tide and high tide it floated on the lake towards the north and settled on the island named "mattel thuruthu" on the eastern side of the pallippuram vallakadavu in the kayal. Near by is the Kallarackal Kadavil Family house and the karanavar of the family took it and kept it in his house and revered it daily lighting 'kida-vilakku'. According to the hindu practice a holy thing keeping in a place where there is ladies presence is not good. Thus thinking later he built a small place of worship like a hindu temple using wood etc, next to his house on the southern side and kept the 'sleeba' there and made arrangements to continnued lighting 'keda-vilakku'. This place of worship is the starting for establishment of the first church in Pallippuram. This place of worship after Latinisation of the church rebuilt to present form. It is now known as 'Kadavil Kurisupally"
