THIRUKURAL - COMMENTARIES (gems of ThiruKural)

ThiruKural, the Tamil Veda is known as the world literature.  Kalladan has made commentaries to each of the couplets in a simple and vivid term enabling even the students as well as the less educated people to understand clearly.

The Poem books deals with nature, love compassion, virtue, eulogy, love for mother tongue, love for mother land, social reform, rational move, national integration, feeling of oneness of soul, mankind etc.

THIRUKKURAL READINGS & REFLECTIONS

KAALANTHORUM KALLADAR

One would be deeply impressed by the primal sensitivity with which Kalladan has dealt with his themes.  Poets in other languages have also dealt with in their poetry subjects like love, compassion, virtue, feelings of oneness with cosmic soul, etc. but the manner in which  Kalladan has handled these subjects is unique in the sense that he has first allowed himself to be totally merged with his themes and then what comes out is so tenderly tinged with a part of his own transformed self that even the mundane assumes a sublimely humane perspective.  What is unusual in his poems is that the ethereal, too, is divested of its abstractness and made to appear an integral part of the throbbing life on Mother Earth.

Kalladan has vision-indeed truly poetic one-and things seen from his point of view present to us noble facets of life, which somehow we fail to see and appreciate because the world is too much with us.  He brings us the back to the Wordsworthian world of Nature’s elemental purity with which human spirit must merge, to make our lives worthwhile and our planet a better place to live in.

Creative Effect & Aims

In his works, the nature’s beauty and the social view can be seen in general; love, grace, virtue, peace and love for the whole of soul being could be felt.  One can witness his desire that every one in the world gets everything needed and enjoys pleasant life.  One can appreciate his love for mother tongue, fellow countrymen, and for his mother country.  In brief, one can see in his verses all that are needed for this century.

Pleasant nature, helping tendency, the way of dealing with file taking that there is life behind each such file, lifting the co-writers and such other rare qualities that could be emulated.

“In these days of Internet world, how could the letter influence mankind; is letter actually needed now?” - exclaims the poet.  Still he finds a positive reply to this.  Our tradition suffers just like a plant beneath the stone, not being able to grow.  The stone, i.e., the present system of life to be moved and the plant to be allowed to grow.  This is the distinctive feature in his writings and the suggestive meaning conveyed by him indirectly.

Let all wealth flourish while

Happiness abounds everywhere

And good will rests with everybody!

Let love, virtue and

Compassion prevail and

Let all pleasure

Coupled with peace pervade!

Let the world attain its height,

Let us wholly join and greet!
