History of Kannampuzha Kaliyadan Family ,
St. Thomas the Apostle befriended some merchants who were traveling
to South India and set his long and promising journey through the water.
Haban, the merchant was a Jew and they arrived in Kodungaloor, Kerala,
India where there were many Jews living close to the coastal area.
Thomas, who had witnessed the Risen Lord, was burning with enthusiasm
to preach the Gospel and carry on the mission, the Lord had entrusted
to them. In coming to India he had two dreams: to look for the scattered
Jews and preach the Good News of the Risen Lord. While
he was in Kodungaloor, he learned about a big Jewish community living
in Palayoor. After visiting Maliyankkara and Paravoor he traveled to
Palayoor. His graceful presence and interaction with other people, especially
with Hindus created big news in Palayoor and slowly they began to approach
him and listen to him with awe and wonder. One day Thomas saw some Brahmins
(the high caste people of that time), in the Temple lake taking bath
as part of their worship ritual. Followed by their cleansing bath they
offered water for the forefathers and did worship by throwing the water
to the sky. Thomas, who was watching this Hindu ritual, slated an argument.
Thomas continued his preaching and gradually many Brahmin families embraced Christianity. Among them, Pagalomattam, Sankkarapuri, Kalli, Kaliyakavu, Koyikkam, Nettamballi, Panaikamattam, Kottukali were some of the prominent families who received baptism from St. Thomas. The history testifies that in the course of history, Kalli came to be known as Kalliyath, Kaliyakavu as KALIYADAN, and Sankkarapuri as Sankkurikal. The
first Kaliyadans were said to be lived in Paravoor and our forefathers
have traced back the beginning of family history to Paravoor. From Paravoor,
they migrated to Puthenchira, Njarakkal and Poyya. For many years, the
Kaliyadans in Poyya traveled back to the old Paravoor Church for the
reception of Sacraments. When St. Ephraim Church was built in Poyya
they all joined the new Parish. Around twenty years ago, St. Ephraim
Church was divided and Little Flower Church came to birth in Pulipparambu,
in order to cater to the Catholics in Pulipparambu and the near area.
Today, a big majority of Kaliyadans is members of the Little Flower
Church at Pulipparambu, Poyya.
