"Prodigal Son"

AN: For those not aware, Kinto is a character introduced in the Avatar TCG, which makes him semi-canon, I guess.

The Waterbending Master stood watch as his ship was being resupplied. This was a necessary stop, but it had to be a quick one if they were going to sail again soon. If it took too long they’d have to wait for the tides again. One would think waterbenders wouldn’t be at the command of the natural tides, but even the greatest of waterbenders cannot control the flow of the entire ocean.

"Well, well, here’s a sight I never thought I’d see."

Pakku didn’t turn, but closed his eyes and pursed his lips in annoyance. He recognized that voice, and he didn’t feel at all like dealing with it right now.

A slap of cold water stung the back of his neck. "I’m talking to you, old man!"

Master Pakku turned slowly, steeling himself to face that proud stance and haughty expression. "So," he said calmly. "This is where you ended up."

Kinto just grinned back. "Who’s ‘ended up’? I’m just passing through, flowing, like my element." He threw his arms open. "But look at you! Out in the world. I though your body would have frozen as solid as your spirit by now."

"And I thought your bad attitude and reckless behavior would have gotten you killed by now."

Kinto just smiled wider. "Aww, now, you make it sound like you have no faith in your students. Or your bloodline, gramps."

Pakku narrowed his eyes. "I do, save for the occasional bad fish."

"I’ve gotten better, old man, want a demonstration?" Kinto slid his leg back, his hands aimed to take ammunition from the bay beside them.

"I don’t have time to deal with a spoiled brat’s temper tantrums." Pakku turned back to his ship, signaling his crew to hurry loading.

"You don’t get off that easily!" Kinto raised his arms and aimed a gigantic wave at the waterbending master. The dock was flooded, several crates being swept away in the process.

Kinto was infuriated to see an ice shield standing where his target had been. The ice shattered, shards piercing the dock inches from Kinto’s boots.

"As foolish as ever," Pakku lectured. "I will not show you the same mercy I did the last time you challenged me."

"You’re the one who’s going to need mercy!" Kinto rearmed himself from the bay and flung ice daggers at his old teacher, each as sharp as a finely honed steel blade. He then created a wave under his feet to take him to a new position where he could launch another attack before Pakku could recover.

But the old master was not taken by surprise. The boy claimed to have gotten better, but he used the same old tricks. Pakku twisted to avoid the daggers, took them under his power and continued the circle, sending a stream of water at Kinto’s feet, and freezing it.

Kinto’s momentum slammed to a stop. Before he could recover, he was hit by another blast, this one freezing him immobile.

Pakku stood before his estranged grandson and shook his head. "I’d say that I hope this taught you a lesson, but I know I’d be wasting my breath." He turned. "We set sail!"

"You’re just leaving me like this?" Kinto sneered. "HA! I knew you didn’t have the guts! You’re the same sentimental old fool you always were."

"Perhaps I am," Pakku replied without turning. "But you’re still the one who can’t move."
