RESOLUTION PASSED AT THE ETHIOPIAN CONFERENCE IN TORONTO, CANADA, ON FEBRUARY 9th 2002.

The Conference of February 9th was attended by a large number of Ethiopians from the city of Toronto, and representatives who came from other cities in Canada. It has been a rare occurrence to find an atmosphere of such warm pride at such a large gathering of Ethiopians. Meles Zenawi has lead a government of malice, deceit, ethnic division, character assassination and treason. Meles Zenawi has been using the antiquated method of “divide and rule” in order to gain power. Honest disagreement and conflict of genuine Ethiopians on several political and economic issues was used to distort the national interest in favor of an Eritrean agenda by Meles and associates. Until very recently there has been a lot of confusion and mistrust deliberately planted and fuelled by the mercenary regime through the paid agents it has assigned around the globe. Such tactics of the mercenary regime have finally been exposed in full detail for all to see.

The Toronto meeting was a result of our worldwide effort for Ethiopian unity and resolve against the Eritrean mercenary regime in Ethiopia. Many have e-mailed and telephoned the organizers of the Toronto conference to express their support and pride at the success of the meeting. It was a colorful event, enhanced by the presence of patriotic Ethiopian guest speakers and a highly supportive Ethiopian audience. The harmony and discipline of all the participants was exceptionally remarkable. The vibrant hall was filled with Ethiopian ethos and spirit. Because of such solidarity, Meles Zenawi’s effort to divide Ethiopians into disorganized and disharmonious mass of people has failed completely. To the dismay of banda leaders, the spirit of patriotic Ethiopians in and outside of Ethiopia has reached its climax. In place of disintegration and ethnic conflict, Ethiopians are mobilizing and forming sold core patriotic Ethiopian mass movement against the divisive Eritrean-controlled government of Meles Zenawi and associates.

The meeting began with a standing ovation to welcome the distinguished speakers. Ato Berihun Assfaw made the opening speech. The second speaker was His Excellency Ato Belai Abbai who was followed by Prof. Teccola Hagos. All of the speakers presented very patriotic, moving, and inspirational speeches based on Ethiopian historical, legal and cultural facts. After the speakers had all completed their speeches, the floor was opened up for the audience to ask questions and/or make comments. Many patriotic Ethiopians began to rise up and speak out freely and courageously unequivocally condemning the mercenary regime in Addis Ababa. The guest speakers happily entertained all questions with great enthusiasm and joy.

The final discussion point was the necessity of conducting a peaceful demonstration against the mercenary regime in Ethiopia. The aim of the demonstration is to expose and reject the bloody, treasonous regime led by Meles Zenawi. It is aimed at telling our Canadian brothers and sisters that the regime of Meles Zenawi is not representative of the Ethiopian people but a camouflaged Eritrean regime in Addis Ababa. It is to tell the world of the inhumanity, injustice, and atrocities going on in today’s Ethiopia.

The following resolution is issued as authorized by the Conference of 9 February 2002.

Resolution of 9 February 2002, Toronto, Canada:

We, the members of the Ethiopian community in Toronto and vicinity, after having thoroughly discussed the current burning issues in Ethiopia, and being cognizant of the fact that an illegally constituted arbitration tribunal called the Eritrea/Ethiopia Boundary Commission is sitting at the Hague trying to impose on Us a Boundary that does not reflect the true historical documentation and events of historical significance. We believe that any consideration of issues affecting the human rights of citizenship of Ethiopians(Afars, Kunamas, Irob et cetera), territorial integrity, and sovereignty of Ethiopia cannot be resolved by an arbitration commission with dubious mandate.

1. The treasonous regime in Ethiopia has fabricated fake so-called treaties of the 1900, 1902 and 1908 to finalize and conclude its mission of destroying Ethiopia. All these treaties have been revoked by Italy when it attacked Ethiopia in 1931-35 and in 1947 when Italy signed the Peace Treaty of 1947. Under international law, Ethiopian is not required to honour void treaties. The mercenaries are trying dig from the archives and tombs of Italian colonialism to treacherously give life to these so-called treaties that have been nullified by history and Ethiopian patriotism. We totally condemn and reject the acceptance of these fake and colonial treaties by the Eritrean regime in Ethiopia. Rather, we affirm the Italian confirmation and testimony of 1947, fully asserting to the international community that they have relinquished any claim in Ethiopia. We appreciate also the assertion of the super powers that they had agreed in 1948 the sovereignty of Ethiopia in the Red Sea.

2. We recognize and appreciate the decision of the Organization of African Unity to deny Eritrean secession based on the Cairo Resolution of 1964.

3. We hold fully responsible Meles Zenawi and his cronies for accepting Eritran secession and running a fake referendum for Eritreans only to conspiratorially let go of Eritrea. We thus totally reject and condemn the 1991 unilateral referendum staged treacherously by the EPRDF.

4. Holding the Eritrean clique ruling Ethiopia fully responsible for the current Ethiopian natural borders dismemberment, and we strongly honour and protect Ethiopian inviolable sovereignty and territorial integrity.

5. We totally reject and condemn the undemocratic set-up and any ruling of the Boundary Commission or by the United Nations. Neither the Boundary Commission nor the United Nations has mandate from the Ethiopian people, who are living in total prison encircled by mercenaries representing Eritrean interests in Ethiopia. We fully hold the United Nations responsible for what follows after the unilateral closure of Ethiopian Red Sea coasts.

6. In order to halt, foil, and abort the conspiracies of Meles Zenawi and his domestic and foreign advisors, we call upon all Ethiopians to stand guard in defence of the honour and pride of our cherished motherland.

7. Admiring the gallant struggles being waged by our fellow Ethiopian citizens, the people of Afar, we assert that all Afar Land along the Red Sea is Afar and Ethiopian since time immemorial.

8. We are committed to work hard in order to have a very strongly united movement against any dictatorship in Ethiopia.

9. We commend and support all recent remarkably heroic demonstration in Addis Ababa and other places in defiance of the dictatorial regime to fight for the democratic rights of the people of Ethiopia. We also commend all protests and oppositions mounting against the mercenary regime in Addis Ababa.

10. We invite all Ethiopians to join us in the forthcoming massive demonstrations to be held in Toronto and Ottawa to make the voices of the oppressed and suppressed people of Ethiopia heard by the Canadian public and Government.

11. We call upon all Ethiopians to rise up in unison regardless of ethnic background, religion, or political affiliation, against the dictatorial and tyrannical regime of Meles Zenawi and his treasonous Eritrean functionaries.
