UNIFUND PROJECT

The Tamil nation is well known for the importance it gives to education, but now education in Tamil areas of Sri Lanka is badly handicapped owing to the political turmoil, destruction and the consequence of adverse economic situation in these areas.

Most of us have been forced to leave our beloved land of origin - North and East of Sri Lanka due to the violence and anarchy prevailing there. A group of University Tamil students here had felt the need to help our brothers and sisters who are pursuing their studies under trying conditions. As a result the Unifund project was born in 1992 to provide some relief to them with the help of the expatriate Tamil community in Sydney.  Since then it has been growing in strength with the generous support of the public. We raise funds through annual concerts (Kalaikathampam), curry nights and donations from well-wishers.

What have we done so far?

We have supported Faculty of Commerce/Arts, Faculty of medicine and the fisheries department of the University of Jaffna by Scholarships, financial assistance via Vice Chancellor’s fund and text books & equipments (computers, TVs & Videos). The Unifund project helped to create an Audio-visual library at the faculty of Medicine, University of Jaffna. The Unifund project supported the Eastern University by scholarships and financial support through the Vice chancellor’s fund. The project has also financially supported the General (teaching) Hospital of Jaffna.

What is our aim?

Unifund project is non-political and it is committed to help the students in the universities in the North and East both materially and financially. We appeal to you to support this great cause and keep the bright lamp of hope burning in the land we are so proud to call our motherland. We are expanding our project to the wider Tamil community in Australia and to the world via internet website.
