DISARMINGLY CHARMING PERFORMANCE
by Joy Alano

October 14, 2006

No string of regret was felt when I broke my monotonous Saturday night routine to head to Bistro 110 last weekend, having promised a friend that I’d make an appearance when his band would be playing there.

The band kicked off their first set with Dishwalla’s Counting Blue Cars, transporting me into musical euphoria. The intro strains of U2’s All I Want Is You rendered me helpless as I probably lost the feeling in my legs. By the last chord of their set wrap-up song (Dave Matthews Band’s #41), I could swear you would need to mop the mush I had melted into on the floor to move me.

It’s obvious that the band has their favorite artists (U2, Dave Matthews Band, Coldplay, Live, etc). They cover each song with such mind-blowing sincerity, respect and dedication it’s infectious. The sound - every drumbeat, bass line, guitar chord, violin strain, melded with the front man’s voice - had the power to charge intense waves of emotion, memory, and awe into every listener in that room that night who had, for at least once in their lives, felt passionate about something.

It’s rare for me to get to listen to good live renditions of music that I like, and there I was, in a little bar in Makati, enjoying the experience given by six disarmingly charming male specimens. It couldn’t get better than this on a Saturday night. Going to a Still Oz gig is truly a treat for the discriminating ear (and for the discriminating eye as well).
