PROPHETS IN THEIR HOMELANDS
by Mara Manabat
May 12, 2005
I confess that I went to John Valdezco’s gig two nights ago
feeling that I was doing a friend a favor. Their band is relatively
new, and I thought John could probably use the support. I
brought my step-daughter along to fill the seats.
We got to Il Ponticello at 10:45. To say that I was mistaken
would be the understatement of the year. We could not find
a single seat, and even a friend who knew the owner of Il
Ponticello had to stand. People were dancing and singing to
Still Oz's music as if it were Friday night!
After five minutes my stepdaughter began to frantically
call her friends to check out the new band. I thought the
music would be too "old" for her, being only 25, but I guess
I was wrong. One of her friends thought John was hot. (Who?
What? Eh? You sure you mean the guy with the saxophone?)
Well, I guess she was right, because the "hot" John was
talking to so many people during break that he didn’t see
me until I finally walked up to him and screamed at his face.
And I think somebody bought him a drink. ;-) But you can’t
expect me to see that kind of thing - you know what they say
about prophets in their homelands.
Anyway, it turns out that John is the manager of Still Oz.
From the number of people he had to talk to that night, I’d
say he’s doing a great job. I saw a good friend there who
wanted to invite Still Oz to play at his wedding next year.
Apparently you need a lead time of one year to book Still
Oz. :-)
I only wish I were with a bigger group that night. Maybe
we can arrange a get-together when Still Oz plays again -
on a weekend. I had one beer and had to call in sick yesterday.
(Geez, I feel old.)
