Off To A Good Start In 2008!

January 20, 2008

Today was an amazing afternoon for the Philippine Squad.

The scoreline says it all. Six-Two! The first half saw both sides playing really tight both up and down the pitch, only broken up finally by multi-assists and a tap-in by none other than Jose "J1" GuevErra (hehe joke). Much to the team's delight we managed to score another goal by half-time courtesy of Jojo "J2" Olayvar. Fitness was definitely up (better than our last foray with the Pirates last December), and passing and team work had vastly improved. Gem performances from midfield Jen, Alvin, and our strong defensive crew led by Raul, Dondi, Adrian and Mark led to more goals by J1 (again), Ken, Indy and Joseph. The two goals against was totally not reflective of our instant goalie Kenneth's keeping skills as the opposing team caught the defense napping, getting a bit loose towards the end with such a big goal differential going for the team.

Kudos to the team for a job well done! What a way to start the year!!! Let's keep the ball rolling...

PFC Scores Against Division 6 Team!

by Oliver Pasco and Kate Natividad

March 1, 2006

Kickoff!

After several months of Saturday afternoon scrimmages, the Philippine Football Club (PFC) finally had its first sortie as a team last Jan 22 at Sentosa Pitch 2. This was in preparation for our plan to join the ESPZEN Sunday League. The opponent was Royal Sports Football Club, a division 6 team that was established some 3 years ago but has been in existence since 1979. Kickoff time was 1500 and we were expected to be ready for warmup and stretching by 1430.

Things somehow started on the wrong foot for the team as we were scrambling for additional players an hour before the start of the game. Failure to field at least 8 players subjects the offending team to a fee of SGD 300 as per ESPZEN rules. Luckily, we were able to find last-minute replacements which brought the number to a total of 11 players. This meant that all of us play the entire 90 minutes of regulation time.

Actual kickoff was past 1500 as the match referee was not yet available at the scheduled time. It was a good thing for the team though as some of us arrived past the scheduled kit-up time of 1430.

The opponents, all 20 or so of them, looked ready to eat us alive by the time we came. First impression was that they are not a ragtag team like us. They even had a legitimate goalie who later on proved to be very important in their win against us. Yes, they ate us alive with a score of 7-1 but allow me to lay down some excuses ummm, reasons why it was still an awesome game that we played!

First of all, it was the very first time that we played as one team. In fact, this was the first time some of us in the team even met each other! We did not have designated positions and we did not have any strategy whatsoever - except to attack! Most of us have never even played competitively in the past. The closest thing to a competition that the team has ever been into in the past 4-5 months that we've been playing socially together was betting on who ends up with the cleanest jersey after a game on a muddy field! Despite that though, no one would have guessed that we've never played seriously before. It seemed like we've been playing for ages!

Second, we were not prepared for running up and down a full-sized pitch for the whole 90 mins! Some of us were dead by the time the halftime whistle sounded. While the other team had the luxury of a gazillion substitutes every nth minute of the game - we had to sweat it out in the field for the whole 1.5 hours! Despite this, everyone in the team proved to be a trooper - playing their hearts out and never allowing themselves to give up. We may not have won the game, but the force was defintely strong with us.

Third, we didn't have a real goalie. We had to sacrifice two skillful players who alternated with the goalkeeping chores. Srikant was the only player on our side to draw the opponent's blood via a fabulous goal from a free kick (John was tackled at the top of the penalty box) but the team did have several good attempts. As mentioned earlier, the opponent's goalkeeper played a very important role in preventing us from scoring some more.

Fourth, no one lost their cool. The opposing team could just not ignore the fighting spirit that we had! If our mere passion could be equated to the number of goals, we would have already qualified for the world cup!

Fifth and last, we gained what we did come for when signing up for this game - fun, a learning experience and a good measure of how and where we are as a team. It paved the way for plans on what we want for PFC and how we will prepare to achieve them. It proved that despite the loss, we could still hold our heads up high and say that we did our best. After all, most of us were just playing for the love of the game!

PFC Fields A Team To Join The ESPZEN Sunday League
January 18, 2005

PFC plays against Royal Sports FC at Sentosa this Sunday in a friendly that will decide whether PFC is fit to join the elite squads battling it out every weekend in what can arguably be called one of the largest and most professionally handled amateur football league in Singapore.

Thanks goes to Graeme (ceburoo at the philfootball.info forums) for the great team logo!!!

A Call to Arms
by Oliver Pasco

September 2005

Put together a large vacant lot, a few balls, some neon cones, a ragtag group of officemates, friends, friends of friends, enough motor skills and lots of energy on an otherwise boring Saturday afternoon and what have you got? A Circus! :P

Pinoy Football Club (SG), as how we call it, came into being only a few weeks back. It was when a group of P&G employees and friends with a common interest in football (soccer in Americanized countries) decided to spend their Saturday afternoons just running around a grassy lot while kicking and chasing a ball. With the thought that no previous experience in nor football skills are required, news has spread like wildfire across Singapore. Before anyone noticed, this has brought in more people from other companies with Citigroup now almost equalling P&G in the number of attendees.

Cirque de Soleil it is not in the way we command our bodies to act, but Pinoy Football Club surely matches this spectacle in terms of energy and enthusiasm. With our very talented and inspiring leaders, John Valdezco and Kate Natividad, saturday afternoons become exercise, skills training and social gathering all rolled into one big ball of fun.

If you are...
...a Filipino who is currently staying in Singapore,
...able to move about and follow simple instructions,
...willing to meet new friends and learn the basics of "The Beautiful Game",
...then join us!
