Neon Genesis Evangelion

 by Saiyijin Prince

Synopsis
Fifteen years after Second Impact (The second most cataclysmic disaster since the asteroid that killed the dinosaurs) the angels have emerged.  What are the angels’ true intentions?  No one knows for sure but what we know is that if any comes into contact with Adam, the first angel and their creator, the world we know it will end and they will inherit the planet.  No conventional weapon can harm the angels and the only chance the human race stand against them lies within the Evangelion.  The Evangelion is the only thing that that can fight an angel where hand-to-hand combat is most effective.  Not any person can pilot the Evangelion; only a select number of 14-year-old children are able to, whose birth date correlates to Second Impact and also because of the bond they form with the Evangelion.  Not only does these children has problems at home, the pilots are also mentally disturbed and sometimes on the edge of insanity, mostly due to the strain the Evangelions has on their mind.  With seventeen angels, the fate of the human race lies within three Evas and three mentally disturbed teens.

Video
The video quality of the DVD is pretty decent.  ADV redid Vol 1 and got rid of the overlay problems and it shows just like the way it was shown in Japan.  The visual effects are really astounding considering that Eva was made in ’95 and the animation and art is still superior to some shows that’s being released now.  One complaint I have with the DVD, mainly because of ADV, not the show itself is that there are a few errors in the subtitles, but nothing to keep you from understanding the plot.

Audio
I didn’t find anything wrong with the sound quality. I thought it was great, and the sound effects for the battles and the Evas really went together.  Some advice, when watching the battles, make sure to have to volume all the way up ;)

Packaging
The box set is really cool, it’s all black with a little red and some parts embossed to give a certain effect and depth.  I thought the cover art was great, there were some cool pictures on them, and inside, each DVD art has the same design, the gray disc with the NERV logo and distinguishes the volume number.  I thought the menu could have been better; the menu is basically the same except the color and design are different but every volume has the same layout.

Personal Opinion
Evangelion is a show that you really can’t take anyone’s word for, it’s different for everyone and it’s something that you either like or hate.  Eva is one of the best series I’ve seen so far. It’s a no ordinary mecha anime where the show focuses more on character development and the plot rather than mechas but there are still some really cool battle scenes.  You are required to think in order to understand the show more but you can watch it just for fun.  Eva is a show that you need to see for yourself, you might find it quite addicting, or just stupid.
