Bastard!

by Saiyijin Prince

Synopsis
Dark Schneider, a lone warlock is now free again after years of imprisonment and now stands alone against his former generals and armies who are bent on world conquest and the resurrection of an ancient evil.  Dark Schneider, sealed in an innocent little boy, now shares a conscience with him and when released, causes him to have a “soft side.”  Now, in order to protect the desperate people of Meta-Rikana, he must face his former friends and ex-girlfriend to prevent them from resurrecting the God of Destruction and destroying the entire world.  But he is not doing it out of the goodness of his heart, for this is the same people who imprisoned him in the first place while leading the same army against their city.  He has some old scores to settle with his old army, former generals and ex-girlfriend and his confrontations with them only spark past memories that cause regret, hate, and rekindles old friendships which sometimes explodes into huge battles where no one is safe around them.

Video
The art and effects are really decent, and some of the characters look really cool in their armor or when they get angry and unleash very powerful spells.  The effects shown on their eyes, clothing and environment when doing attacks look really impressive, which only adds to the effect of the battles itself.   The visual effects and animation of some battles are pretty awesome and very expressive that has a sort of Dragon Ball Z-ish look but in my opinion better.  The quality is also very good, I didn’t notice any distortions in the picture and it’s pretty clear and crisp.  I thought Pioneer did a good job on this, considering that they put all six episodes on one disc while maintaining such high quality.

Audio
The audio effects and background music are pretty cool.  There’s not really much I can say about the audio.  I didn’t really find anything wrong with the audio and I thought it went well with the video and matched up pretty well with the visual effects.

Packaging
Like I mentioned before, I thought Pioneer did a good job with this DVD.  I don’t really think that the cover art is really impressive but nonetheless, that sort if thing isn’t really important considering that the whole series is in this single DVD.  The menu is all right, nothing really fancy but still pretty cool looking, in my opinion, and overall I think it’s a great value.

Personal Opinion
If you are looking for just a fun, action packed anime, I suggest checking out Bastard!  The battles are really impressive and I think it’s something that anyone would enjoy since it’s full of action and humor.  The mood of the show can quickly change from very serious to humorous or vice versa which is why it is so enjoyable, but rarely a bit disappointing but nothing that let will your hopes down for it always gets better later on.  It’s a great, short fantasy anime with a lot of action and battles anyone will enjoy who’s just looking for a fun show to kick back and relax.

P.S. Bastard! Contains some scenes of nudity and gore and is recommended ages 16+.
