Akira

 by Fat Baby

Synopsis
Neo-Tokyo has risen from the ashes of World War III to become a dark and dangerous megalopolis infested with gangs and terrorists. The government seethes with corruption and only maintains a token control over the powerful military that prevents total chaos and hides the secrets of the past.

Childhood friends Tetsuo and Kaneda plunge into Neo-Tokyo's darkest secret when their motorcycle gang encounters a military operation to retrieve an escaped experimental subject. Tetsuo, captured by the military, is subjected to experiments that make him a powerful psychic, but, unfortunately for Neo-Tokyo, Tetsuo's powers rage out of control and he lashes out at the world that has oppressed him! Nothing can stop the destructive forces that Tetsuo wields except possibly the last boy to destroy Tokyo - AKIRA!

Video
Absolutely amazing is all that I can say for the video quality of Akira. The animation and colors are jaw dropping. The colors are solid but luscious and the animation is smoother then I have seen before. I was stunned when watching how they re-mastered Akira and how all of these details were added which made it look remarkable and way ahead of its time.

Audio
Like the video quality, the audio is absolutely amazing. The voice actors are very clear in what they say, the sound is crisp, and the music sounds great in Dolby Digital 5.1. The Akira audio track was remade for the new and improved version, and is done absolutely perfectly.

Packaging
Akira comes in a shiny black limited edition tin case. The letters AKIRA are all raised from the black exterior and the dvd had many extras such as a production report which is 50 minutes of talking about how they made the movie, and re-mastered it. There is also a 30 minute interview with Katsuhiro Otomo (the creator) where he also talks about how he came up with the idea and turning an idea into an anime. With an amazing audio, video and packaging review, Akira is defiantly worth the purchase. If you have a HDTV or want to see it in really good quality get the special edition described above.

Personal Opinion
Legendary....so so!
