| Lesson Eight |
| Subject: Lesson Eight: Spins & Turns Spins & Turns **Don't forget basic stance!! Practice with a veil if you like. Spotting: Spotting is suppose to keep one from getting dizzy during spins. Find a spot either on the floor or the wall in front of you. Watch that spot for as long as you can as you turn. When your head is turned too far to see it, bring the head around, and look at that spot again. Some spot using something moving with them. Either their veil or hand, or prop. Find which works for you. Spin: A turn in place. Rather than cross the feet (which can entangle one), or hop up on one foot and spinning on the ball (Twirl), place one foot slightly toward the direction you are turning, shift weight and move the other foot beside it. Butterfly turn: Usually done with a veil. Turn, and move the arms up & down, like with arm waves. Try to keep the arm that is toward the audience the down arm so they can see you (unless you are trying to "hide" for the dance) Spiral: While doing the butterfly spin, spiral the arms around the body. Rather than doing arm waves, like in the butterfly, bent the arms slightly around, so it looks like a spiral. Barrel roll: Bend at the waist, and turn, keeping the upper body in the same area. This is very pretty with a veil. Pivot turn (front & rear): Place all the weight on one foot. With the other foot, use the ball of the foot to push the body around in the circle. Hip movements may be added to this movement. /With lift /With Drop /With Twist front /With Twist rear Pivot Turn with Drop kick: Do a pivot turn, then follow with a hip drop and a slight kick crossing the body. Repeat starting with the pivot turn. 3 Point Turn: This turn is also a travel step. Place all the weight on the foot that is on the direction you want to turn. Spin 180 degrees, so you are facing the opposite direction. Shift weight to the other foot, and repeat the spin. You should now be facing the direction you started from. The count for this move is: Step, Step, Step Large Hip Circle Turn-Smooth: While doing a large hip circle, move the feet in a circle pattern, causing the body to turn. Large Hip Circle Turn-Bounce: While doing a large hip circle, move the feet in a circle pattern, causing the body to turn. As each foot places a step, lift the body up then down, as if bouncing. |
