SOMETHING TO
THINK ABOUT...

"IF EVERYONE IS OUT, THEN WHO IS IN?"

One of my favourite inspiring authors and teachers is Alan Cohen.  From his first One Story chapter in "The Dragon Doesn't Live Here Anymore," comes his wisdom about "being in, being popular"

"Somewhere along the line, I traded in my sense of O.K. kid for a self-iamge taht seemed always to be somehow less than others.  I was overweight, awkward, and the only Jewish kid in the neighborhood.  I thought there was something wrong with me, and that there was something I had to do (like be skinny, athletic, and Protestatnt to be like the gang of popular kids.)
Since that time, however, as I have gotten to know more and more of the popular kids, I have had a startling discovery; they felt the same way.  They, too, felt that there was something different about them, and that they had to be popular and acknowledged to earn love.  Just like me, they thought there was an "in crowd," and they were out.
This gave me something very interesting to think about:  If everyone felt out, who, then, was "in?"  As it turns out, there never really was any "in crowd."  Except in the eyes of those who thought they were out -- which was just about all of us.
And so we are not different after all.  As we begin to share our stories, it becomes clear that we all learned to fear and feel separate and alone.  We can see, too, that it is only the details of our stories that are different, and that the heart of our separate stories is really the same.  What we thought were different stories are really One Story -- our story.
