Grate Steak: Where you always cook the perfect steak!
When I go to a restaurant, my biggest problem is my steak always being cooked the wrong way. That is definitely not the case at The Grate Steak restaurant. They have a wide variety of steaks and other food to choose from on the menu, as well as a large selection of drinks. I had never been to the Grate Steak before, but I was told by a couple of friends how good it was. I thought my roommate, her parents and I should go see what it was like. The food is good, the service is great and the prices are excellent.
When I first walked into the restaurant, I was not that impressed with the waiting area. It was kind of small with a couple of chairs. As I looked past the hostess stand, I think my mouth dropped to the floor. There behind the stand was a large 30 x 10 feet grill about waist high and brick from the floor to the top of the grill. Scattered around the edges of the grill were spices and cooking utensils. To the right of the grill was a fairly large salad bar with fresh lettuce, fruits, vegetables, and all of the toppings I could put on a salad. Across from the salad bar was the baked potato bar. The baked potato bar had mounds of sour cream, cheese, chives, tomatoes, butter, and on the side was hot, melted cheese and chili.
We were seated in a corner table by the full sized bar. The others in my party ordered drinks from the bar, while I stuck with my usual sweetened iced tea. Our server, Kevin, came to our table and was very soft spoken, but polite. He introduced himself and asked if we had all been here before. I told him this was my first time, and he started to tell me a little about the restaurant. Kevin said that all of their meats are sent weekly from Chicago, and that we could cook our own steak if we desired. I found that to be the best part of the whole dining experience. Kevin gave us a moment to look at the menu and decide what we would like for dinner. At the Grate Steak, "Beef is back" (Salasky) definitely, but, unfortunately, I was not in a steak mood, fortunately they have a great selection of other foods to choose from. For seafood, I saw about four types of fish, a crab cake dinner and a shrimp dinner. There were chicken entrees as well. They also offer combination dinners with all three of the meats featured: steak, seafood, and chicken. The seafood and chicken are cooked in the kitchen.
My roommate and I got the potato and salad bar. All I have to say is "great." Where can you find an all-you-can-eat baked potato and salad bar? The rest of our party chose the Petite cut Top Sirloin and the Restaurant cut Top Sirloin. All of the steak dinners that are cooked by you come with all-you-can-eat salad bar and baked potatoes. While they were cooking their steaks, my roommate and I were helping ourselves to the salad bar. Every time someone in our party cleared a plate, Kevin was right there to clean it up and replace it with a new plate. The servers, also known as the Chef"s Assistants, were very friendly and always had a smile. They were also very informative and helpful.
Of course, the most important part of our dining experience was the check. Though this is a steak and potato restaurant, the prices did not show it at all. The prices ranged from most expensive being $31.95 to the least expensive being $7.95. We were all too stuffed to eat desert, but our server offered us a daily special, which was a sweet potato pie. They also have homemade cheesecake with various fruit toppings and a homemade brownie with ice cream and hot fudge.
The Grate Steak can be found on Coliseum Dr. near the Hampton Coliseum. I suggest going with the whole family. The restaurant seats approximately 320 people comfortably. Parts of the restaurant have quiet booths for small and large parties accompanied with regular tables and chairs in case someone does not like sitting in booths. The walls are decorated with various country tools, and pictures. The room where you cook your steak even has a picture of a haystack, in which you try to find the needle while cooking. I recommend The Grate Steak because of the fun atmosphere and it is a perfect family spot to eat.
