A Knight's Tale |

I was very surprised when I walked in the theater to watch A Knight's Tale on Friday. I thought this was going to be a serious story about knighthood and chivalry. Instead, I got rock-and-roll at jousting tournaments, a gambling-addicted writer, followed by the usual knight trying to win the girl's heart, and proving to everyone that he is the "man." |
When the movie started, everyone was startled to hear the song "We Will Rock You," as the crowd at the jousting tournament was singing the words and banging the beat. While the crowd is getting into the song and waiting for the tournament to start, Will (Heath Leadger) finds out the knight he works for is dead. Will quickly gets into the knight's armor and wins the tournament for himself and his two friends (Mark Addy and Alan Tudyk). Since Will has wanted to be a knight his whole life, he decides to take the money he won and travel to jousting tournaments all over Europe under the name of Ulrich Van Lichetnstein. What was Lichetenstein"s main goal? It was to go and participate in the "World Championships" in London. |

As Will and his friends are walking towards their first big tournament, they meet a poor, gambling-addicted writer named Geoffrey Chaucer. Chaucer tells the men he will write Will's heritage rights if they let him tag along to the tournaments. Of course, they need these papers to enter the tournaments, so they agreed. Throughout Will's travels to different tournaments, he meets a princess Jocelyn (Shannyn Sossamon) and falls in love. What he did not realize was that he was competing with his worst enemy (Rufus Swell) in jousting, as well as for the heart of Jocelyn. |

The plot of this story comes from the Canterbury Tales, of course with a little twist. As the competitors come out, they have a large introduction, people with banners cheering them on, and their very own theme music in the background. Then, added in to the story, is the usual princess making the knight prove his love by doing something totally off the wall. In this case, Will was to lose the tournament. Once Jocelyn realized what she had done, she told Will to begin to win, and he was badly beaten. Not only did his love for her cost him the tournament, it almost cost Will's life. |

After fighting his way to the top of the list at the tournaments, and to the World Championships, officials found out that Ulrich was actually Will, and he was arrested. Seeing his bravery and courage, the prince of England knighted Will, Sir William, and he was able to compete in the World Championships. The princess found Will's father, whom he had not seen in years, and brought him to see his son win the tournament. |

I would definitely recommend this movie to those who enjoyed the modern Romeo and Juliet. This movie was great fun, had great comedy, and great action. For women, it is filled with love and romance and what every girl would love to happen to her. (Have a guy fight for her love.) For the guys, it has lots of action and fighting. A Knight's Tale is an action packed movie with a good mix of romance and laughter. |
