"Ranma!" the female voice calls to me. "Look out!" The warning almost came too late. Still, I managed to throw myself out of the way before the creature's projectiles could make swiss cheese out of me. I ended up eating dirt, but that was better than the alternative. I rolled to my feet as the creature's henchman surrounded me, lashing out with a spin kick to back them up and give me some breathing space. "How're ya doin'?" I call to my companion, a crack of thunder and lightning accompanying my question. I hope that means it won't rain. I really don't like the rain. She flashes me a brief smile, before dragging out her mallet and smashing three of the strange, grey, humaniond creatures into the ground. Her hand-to-hand skills aren't that good, but very few can match her when she's wielding her chosen weapon. I wasn't really worried, because she had other tricks up her sleeves as well. Then I've no more time for pondering, as I have my own problems to deal with. Two of the six grey foot soldiers that are surrounding me, move into attack. Their punches and kicks are easily blocked and dodged, and I counter attack by striking their most vulnerable point, the `Z' medallion on their chest. After a couple of impacts, it's enough to cause them to explode into pieces. Then there are suddenly no more grey guys to deal with. However, the feeling that something is horribly wrong still buzzes in my mind. "Ranma!" she calls again, worry etched heavily in her voice. "Look!" I jerk around and see the head demon floating high in the air, an unconscious hostage in his hands. I snarl at the disfigured creature and prepare to attack, but a paw on my arm stops me. I detect the shaking of my companion's head in my peripheral vision, and reluctantly power down. "Let Trunks go!" I yelled to the armoured mutant porcine. "Not likely!" Fudgiepig replies. I knew it's name because, we'd run into the creature before. "If you want him back, you know where to find him!" And then he's gone, teleporting away in a flash of light. "Damn it!" I swear, striking the ground with a ki-enhanced punch. The shockwave collapses a nearby alread-ruined building, but I don't care. "They got him! After all we've been through and they take him, just like that!" I feel that familiar paw on my shoulder again, accompanied by that soothing female voice that's become a comfort to me in these hardened and hopeless times. "You can't blame yourself, Ranma. You've already done more thant anyone has thought possible. In fact, if it wasn't for you, none of us would be here." Her words have a grain of truth, but I'd been through too much, killed too many people, that the feelings I held inside were as dead as the blackened and charred landscape around us. My thoughts matched the sickly purple skie, marred only by the greenish-grey clouds above. I sigh, and look back to give my companion a wan smile. "Thanks, Babs. Let's get everyone else together and move out." We'd been attacked almost everyday by the queen's demons and henchmen, so just because they had captured one of our own, didn't mean they wouldn't attack again. "Are you hurt?" She smiles and shakes her head, and I know that means she's okay. She's been through so much as it is, having lost an eye on Earth #15, which was many dimensions ago. She now sports a black eyepatch over her right eye that she wears like a badge of honor. I picked her up on the 2nd Earth I visited, ever since the Queen appeared and lay siege to my Earth. Apparently, a lunar mission launched by the Americans awakened an evil that was lying dormant on the moon. It didn't take the rest of Earth to realize what was happening, once the USA lost contact with the astronauts. In no time, She appeared in the sky with her hideous demons and mutants, and began her assault. The vast majority of Earth's countries were conquered within days, weeks at the most. The US held out the longest, last I heard they were still putting up a fight. So were we. When they hit Japan, I tried to fight them as well. I wasn't alone, with my pop, Ryoga, Ukyo, the Amazons, and even Happosai lending a hand. We held them off for awhile, until the Queen herself arrived to deal with us personally. We almost had her, but it was ruse. She killed half of our group with a powerful spell, and created a portal that tried to suck Akane in when she got within striking distance of the Queen. A the last second, I managed to move get my beaten body moving and push her out of the way, but that meant I got sucked in instead. It turned out to be an inter-dimensional portal, and landed me in a parallel world. The creatures there were interesting, intelligent beasts, waging a war for survival of their own. The best I could figure out, was something about losing a basketball game. I never did find out what it was all about, and Babs gets all quiet and meloncholy when I bring it up. Seems she has painful memories of losing good friends as well. Naturally I got drawn into their war on the side of the resistance, and that's where I met Babs. Of course she being female, she had a jealous boyfriend that saw me as a threat, due to a misunderstanding. Babs tried to stop him, but we had a fight and Buster was killed. I didn't mean to, but he was going berserk or something. In the end, I told Babs that I was trying to get back home and she offered to give me a ride out of their world. They were losing their war and were planning on fleeing to another dimension anyway. I couldn't believe they possessed inter-dimensional travel, until she demonstrated by pulling out a black hole and slapping it on a wall. We used that method to escape, and in gratitude for my help in getting the rest of her people out, Babs went with me to help me save my own world. That was twenty-odd worlds and 4 years ago, mostly pretty hellish places, though we did meet a few traveling companions and friends on the way. On one of those, we met a dying mother who told us to take her son, Trunks, with us. Her world was being destroyed by androids and she wanted her He seemed pretty upset to leave, but her mom knew it was for the best. Babs cups her hands around her mouth. "Usa! Stephen! Let's go!" "I... AM... COMING... BABS... RANMA," comes the electronic voice of my third companion. In no time, he rolls into view from another burned out building, his hoverchair bristling with weaponry. It was a normal electronic wheelchair in the universe we found him in, but Stephen was able to modify it with more powerful technology as we traversed dimensions. His reasons for coming with us was just scientific curiosity, I think. He's always studying the new technology we come across, and he's also our resident wormhole and inter-dimensional specialist. It was he who finally managed to atune Babs's black hole skill to get us back to my homeworld. Or what was left of it. The city we're in now was once Tokyo, but now it's mostly of a collection of dead structures, eerily silent. The Queen's army has managed to dominate most of the globe and I've yet to find any of my old friends, or even... Akane. But I won't give up. Rita's gonna pay for all she's done to my world and my friends. "You seen Usa?" I ask him. "WE... GOT... SEPERATED... IN... THE... ATTACK," he replies. "SORRY." "Not your fault," I tell him. "USA!" Babs calls in her special loud voice, then perks her long, pink ears up, listening intently for a response. She's got the best hearing out of all of us. Apparently she does hear something, because her head suddenly snaps in one direction and she takes off in that bounding, running gait that I've become familiar with. Me and Stephen keep follow right behind, until she stops under the smoking wreckage of a building and begins to dig, another specialty of her species. I lend a hand, while two robotic hands pop out of Stephen's techno-chair and begin to lift heavy wooden and steel beams and rubble out of the way. "Usa!" I call as I toss several boards away. "Are you in there?" For once, I'm gratified to hear that whiny, female voice in reply, even if it is muffled. I can't make out any words, but at least I know she's still alive. We've lost too many people over the years as it is. Mixed into the rubble, I notice several dozen broken, pink hearts, evidence of what collapsed the building. Usa must have been careless in her aiming and brought the roof down on top of her head while trying to hit her enemies. It takes us several minutes, but we manage to dig the young, 11-year-old girl out. I breath a sigh of relief when I see her twin pony-tailed, pink hair poke out of the wreckage, the rest of her quickly following. Her blue and white fuku is torn and dirty as we pull her out, and she has several bloody cuts on her legs and arms. Babs begins to bandage her, and in no time she's ready to travel once more. In a way I feel sorry for her. She was in pretty bad shape when we found her on Earth #10, or was it #9? Her friends were all girls, some kind of superheroes that were protecting the weak, until something more powerful began to take them out. All we could do was take Usa with us, at the behest of the blond girl. I never did get her name, though Usa had called her `mom'. She's a brave girl, nonetheless, and not a bad fighter. It's a good thing too. We're going to need every advantage and help if we're going to defeat Rita and rescue Trunks. ----------------------------------------- Author's notes: Ranma. A Tiny Toon.
