The original Godzilla incarnation, ShodaiGoji, is probably among the most respected and loved suits in the massive category it belongs to. With this very suit, the world was introduced to what would become one of the most recognizable pop-culture icons of all time... This suit sported tiny ears near the back of Godzillas head, and slender fangs protruding from the front of the mouth. The originals Godzilla was four-toed, and had eyes that were positioned toward the front of the head. All of these features would, for the most part, become obsolete.and make random appearances in different incarnations throughout the generations. One unseen quality of the ShodaiGoji suit that would influence his later appearances, was the massive weight of the bulky rubber kaiju. The suit itself weighed an intense 220 lbs., a (believe it or not) improvement that was made over the very first suit designed for this film, which turned out to be nearly immobile.

The original actors were still only able to stay in the improvement suit for a handful of minutes before dehydration and overheating occurred. The suit was painted Brown to contrast well with the environment around it, being that it was ofcourse in black & white.

The image captured to the right is an early concept design for ShodaiGoji. Its quit different, but yet not too much of a change. Needless to say I think we are all glad they decided on the ShodaiGoji we all know and love. Otherwise, we could have ended up with HamsterZilla over there...
