We fade
into Chamelion sitting on a bar stool, and nothing around him, as a single
spotlight shines down to illuminate a very small circle around him. He greets us with a nod and a half smile.
“Greetings BWF, and welcome to a very special
edition of the State of
“Let’s start off with my name, shall we? The history of my name is a little complex,
I’ll admit. Originally it was my
brother’s moniker when he joined the PWA back in 99, but when he was sidelined,
possibly never to return, I took it upon myself to avenge him and stepped into
the ring for the very first time. To
honor him, I chose to become the new Chamelion and found that it suited me
quite nicely. Ya see, kiddo; it applies
more to me then you can see. A chameleon
CAN change it’s colors, as much as I can change my wrestling style to adapt to
the match I am in. You said the animal
is calm until approached, I’m somewhat like that, and if you’d done your
research, you’d know that one thing I really enjoy doing is mimicking my
opponent’s finisher, using it against them.
No, you may not see the similarities, but that’s just because you’re not
looking hard enough. Of course, in the
end you just may not care…but to be successful, you should always care about
every little detail.”
“That includes covering any possible aspect
that your opponent may address, especially major errors of mistaken identity. I
don’t expect you to be ‘shallow’ about it, but any good wrestler will use any
and all possible material to propel themselves in that ring, and that does
include how well you debate. People
often ask me why we spend so much time jabbing back in forth, when it’s what we
do in the ring that accomplishes our goals.
I always tell them it’s the best way to get to know who we are, how we
are… and because of that; covering one’s ass when a mistake is made; is a necessary
evil.”
“I knew you’d say something about the mirror
thing I did, but that was nothing more then having a little fun. I certainly am no narcissist, and honestly if
the only thing that mattered was myself, why would I be wasting any time on
you? I mean, hell, I told you from ‘day
one’ I respected you0 and the effort
I’ve put forth should be evidence enough.”
“Now, the difference between you and I
concerning past opponents is that while I started out in the same level as you,
when thrown into high caliber matches, I continued to find success. By the way, kiddo, for someone who complained
that I ‘remembered’ your one loss more then your victories, I notice you failed
to mention names like Legend, Cody Clark, Sirus Moran or the Executioner when
accusing me of living in a glass house.”
“Then again, I’d expect you to ‘forget’ those
particular names, now that you’ve completely changed your tune about this whole
thing. First you ask me to remember the
things you did since coming here; remember this and remember that, and now you
want me to forget all of it? Make up
your mind, please. It’s these kind of
turn arounds that solidify the fact that I have you scrambling to find a foot
hold against me. Seeing your chances
this Monday slipping, you take the path of ‘it doesn’t really matter’.”
“Kyle, kiddo, it does matter, at least to
me. It’s not so much the record I
currently hold here, but I do enjoy the thrill of success, and more
importantly, it’s excellent momentum going into Hearts on Fire, and that means
there’s as much on the line for me, as there is for you. Actually, every time I go in there and
survive, it’s good momentum to carry me forward and over the next challenger
that comes my way. Some of those
encounters matter more then others; Legend for example stands as my most
difficult task since I arrived here. The
Grimms come second, but darn close to first, because the history between them
and my brother is legendary.“
“I also question your sudden 180 on the comment
about my number one contendership.
Bringing it up to begin with, would cause any man to believe you’re
trying to goad me into putting it on the line, otherwise why mention it? If it is not important, and you do not care,
then wasting breath about it seems silly.
No, I don’t expect you to agree with me, but I conclude you wanted the
world to believe I was afraid. Afraid
that you’d defeat me and take my spot at the PPV. I’m not allowed to do so, per BWF rule, but
if you really knew me, seen what I’d done in my past federations; you’d
understand that it’s something I’d gladly do.
I’ve always been a man that believes if someone beats me, they deserve
what I have… whether I have gold or a chance for it. Besides, think about it, I falter this coming
Monday and it will put doubt into the minds of the fans that I’ll be able to
pull it off against Toxic the next week.
Remember, kiddo, it’s all about momentum.”
“However, allow me to take a stab as to why you
feel this match is so important to you.
I’d like to think that despite your long history, your successes outside
of this country, proving yourself here and now matters a great deal to
you. Should you win, or at least put up
the best fight of your life against me; you will solidify yourself as a main
event caliber wrestler, and the BWF will take true notice of you, in fact,
maybe even begin to line you up against the best this business has to offer,
which will lead to championship gold. It
may not matter now, gold, but in the end; isn’t that what we all strive for?”
“In the end, when all is said and done, I
promise you that the BWF will recognize you.
You’ve earned that already, not because of your victories here, but
because you’ve survived the drama, worked to better yourself and taken your
loss to Eliminator in stride. When pitted
against the Most Devious S.O.B. in the business today, you did not blink. I admire that, respect that, and ya know
what, you’re wrong about one thing; I do like you. That doesn’t change what will happen Monday,
and what tactics I will do to defeat you, but unlike many in my career, at the
end of the night, I’ll be the first to congratulate you no matter the outcome.”
“The BWF and the world will bare witness to an
incredible event come Havok; when the best in the business collides with a
shining young star, and it will be a feast for the eyes. Two men with an incredible array of skill,
and equal desires to showcase their strength, and while their goals are
different, the ultimate finish line remains the same. You said it well, only one will have their
hand raised, yet both will have added something truly remarkable to add to
their careers. Still, in my heart I
believe I need to keep my momentum. Because of that I will not falter when it
truly counts and in the end, I will hear the Sweet Sound of Success…. GOT IT!?”
As the
light fades out, we hear the sound of the screaming fans fade in for a few
before we cut away completely.
