At the age of 16, Kuraki Mai made her debut as Mai-K
in America on the 16 October 1999.
Her debut maxi-single, Baby
I Like, sold 5000 copies in America, which was quite good for a
new artiste.
Mai's vocal powess caught the attention of Mark Kamins,
who later produced the remix version of Baby I Like,Baby
I Like REMIXIES, on 06 December 1999.
At once, Mai was recalled back
to Japan after receiving news of her talent.
On 08 December 1999, Mai released Love,
Day After Tomorrow, her debut maxi-single in Japan.
As expected, it made it right to the top of the Oricon
Charts.
Mai became the greatest rival of Utada Hikaru, who
has also spent her childhood in America.
Like Hikaru, Mai was also into R&B, which made
people say that she's a copycat of Hikaru.
However, Mai soon proved them wrong.
With her following singles, Mai proved that she does
have her own style.
On 28 June 2000, Mai
released her first album, Delicious Way,
which sold 3.3 million copies and shot straight up the Oricon Charts.
Mai also set a new record
for Best Selling Female Artiste, Best Selling Debut Album, and also Best
Selling Original Album.
