Bill Hillcourt was born in Denmark in 1900.   He emigrated to the U.S, and because of his Scouting background, went to work for the Boy Scouts of America.  He wrote the first Handbook for Patrol Leaders, the Scout Fieldbook and a Boy Scout Handbook.  He also wrote the first biography of the founder of Scouting,  Baden-Powell, Two Lives of a Hero.  Bill was known to millions of boys as Green Bar Bill, because of a column he wrote for many years in Boys Life Magazine.

In 1987, through one of those mysteries of fate, Keith Birkemeyer assumed responsiblity for Bill during a visit to Orlando.  Bill met Don Owens and many of the rest of the troop during that visit.  We invited him back for a Court of Honor, during which two Scots received the first Queen Scout Awards (British equivalent to Eagle Scout) ever presented in the U.S.  Later, he came back again to be Camp Chief of a district camporee run by Troop 46.

Bill died during a world tour in 1992 in Stockholm, Sweden.

He was the holder of the Silver Buffalo, highest award in U.S. Scouting, and the Bronze Wolf, highest award in International Scouting.
